Vincent pictures, please?
« on: December 20, 2009, 10:35:59 PM »
I am not sure if this is the right forum for this posting so if it is not, please feel free to relocate it.

I am interested in building a Vincent rifle as a future project.  Does anyone have pictures of their Vincent that they would be interested in sharing to help with my research?  Halfstock, fullstock, original or reproduction, John or Caleb.  I would also appreciate any leads on good books or articles for researching the Vincent.  Finally, has anyone built or seen any Vincent or Vincent-inspired pistols?  I would love to see pictures of those, as well.  I have a hare-brained scheme hatching in my head to eventually build a matched pair in .36 caliber, rifle and pistol, for target shooting.

Thanks so much.

Here's a couple of links to some pics of a Vincent I built a couple of years ago. If you live anywhere near the Marrietta Ohio area, there is a show of Ohio rifles (Ohio Longrifle Collectors) with a number of Vincents.

I hope this works.

This is a .40 Vincent I built for my dentist.  Note the human teeth silver inlays behind the cheeck piece.  Based on original Vincents.  Note the test targets and the difference in velocity of .020 and .010 patches!

Lobo,
Here are some pics of an original Vincent I took  at this years CLA show, it is in the collection of Dan Kindig/Log Cabin. This year I was concentrating on inlays, patch boxes, cap boxes, and engraving so the only full length pic is with Larry holding it.
  Regards, Steve Chapman

The rifle is really in like new condition it looks like it's never been fired, I don't know how they could load it without a crown.

While it is a variant having a Hawken breech the stock design and comb flutes are right I am told.
The stock was a TOW precarve but I sent back about 4 at the time and finally gave up and just made a lock plate to fit the hole and lived with a small bark inclusion. Hopefully this has changed.
If I were to do another one I would do it from a blank and varnish it.

Sorry for the photo quality I need to get the gun back and take some better ones.

A couple years ago I got on a run of building Vincent style rifles.  I built a .32, .45, .50 and a fullstock .36.  I had a great deal of difficulty making the first one. The first one was only my 6th gun I had built.  I built it from a blank and as I removed wood, I was always afraid I removing too much.  After I built the first Vincent I got to handle a few originals and got over my fear of removing too much wood.    For the .45 and the .50 I made a little different style buttplate.  The buttplate is a little wider and the curve is a little more gentile on the arm.  Out of all, the .50 and the .36 turned out to be the best.  I only wish I would have taken pictures of those two.  Here is a picture of the second one I made.  It turn out OK but is still a little too fat.

Volume 5 of Ohio Gunsmiths and Allied Trandesmen has a number of Vincent rifles -- and a number of oriignals usually show up the the spring show in Marietta -- well worth a trip if you can make it -- dates are on the aolrc website
