March postal match
« on: March 01, 2024, 06:16:44 PM »
I thought we might do 2 targets this month, one at 25 yards and same one at 50 yards. Hopefully we can see the following target to aim at the 50 yrd distance, since bigger black bulls use way too much ink.

https://www.mytargets.com/               go to the tenth target down, a black ring with a red dot in the center.

Black/red counts 10, next ring out 9, outer ring 8, the red dot center for tie breakers.
5 shots each target, maximum of 100.
1st target: 25 yards offhand
2nd target: 50 yards with elbows on bench

I guess shoot as many sets as you want, but just submit one set (revision 3/1/2024, 1451 CST)

I like the target. But why not make the 25 yard offhand and the 50 rested?

25 yds offhand sounds good to me.

How many sets of 2 targets are we allowed? Remember many of our shooters are still in the deep freeze so if you let unlimited number of target sets it is a little unfair to those who may only be able to get out once or twice. Just a thought.

"5 shots each target, elbows on bench, maximum of 100"
 ;)

Not sure if the 25 yard has been changed to offhand/standing.
This change would need a change to the first post, declaring the rules.
For us, it's supposed to warm up NEXT weekend to 4 or 5 degrees.

Daryl: In the post just above mine he agreed the 25 yard target is now offhand. I agree he should have changed the original post to reflect this but it's his first match to run so let's all help him in any way we can.

Can anyone tell me the size of the center circle of the target? My computer and printer will only allow me to print the picture that is posted, I can enlarge it to the proper size with the measurement. thanks in advance.

On my printer the red dot is just shy of 3/4", maybe 0.73"

The main bull (red dot center, black ring and the red line around the black ring) measures about 2.15".

I downloaded the target to my computer opened it and hit print, and that is what I got.

Foresterdj, got a 25yd, offhand Smoothbore target shot today.
.62 Fusil De Chasse
.600 RB with .020 patch, ballistol/ water lube
70 gr Swiss 2F, 2F in the pan.
First time I’ve shot Swiss out of this gun and had to adjust my sight picture somewhat to get on target. I’ll see how it works out at 50 yds.

Two weeks to go. Let's get out and shoot some. It will be a good tune up for shooting your Easter eggs on the 31st.

I have been shooting the target , but you said to post only one set. Our weather has been less than favorable for shooting.  I hope to have better weather at the end of this week. Along with better results.

I'm hoping I get a weekend without crazy winds, so that I can get out in shoot. This weekend, I didn't bother trying. Last time out, I could shoot at one of my knockdown targets and hit the one next to it thanks to the wind gusts!

WOW only one target has been posted this month? I am currently buried in dealing with caring for my for 94 year old mother (most important thing in my life right now), and it is going to pour rain everyday through the end of the month. What's your excuse?

Well I guess we will look for some targets in a week or so.

I have been getting a little range time with my 2 newly built Jaegers, hoping to use one of them for this. This week we had below freezing and windy, some days single digits. Might try tomorrow since by Sunday we have a forecast for 2 days of snow and maybe 12 - 15 inch accumulation, I hope the NWS is wrong on this.

I shot these on the 17th with my new cap lock rifle. I was hoping for better weather, but it appears Winter is coming back today with a vengeance.
The rifle is .45 caliber. I was using 50 grains Dupont 3f, .440 balls, JoAnn's 40 drill lubed with bear oil.
I shot these after trying to work up loads at 50 yards. Very cold with swirling wind and humidity. I figured that since I was at the range, I might as well shoot a couple of targets.
The one on the left was 25 yards offhand. The one on the right was 50 yards elbows on bench. Horrible position I would have rather shot it sitting, but the target stands are way too tall for that.

Alacran, your 50 yard looks to me like a 44 (I think the one hole makes the 10 ring), thanks for submitting.

I am waiting until it warms a little, woke up to 3 degrees this morning.

Well, it warmed up to 22 F, but at the range had about 10 mph wind straight into my face. Had planned to do some load testing before shooting the match targets, but too cold for that. Gun is one of my recently finished jaegers, this one (named Evelyn) has a Moody barrel, very narrow lands and wide grooves a 1:30 twist. Used 70 grain FFg a .018 patch with Hoppes lube a .535 RB. Shot the 50 yard target first, then the 25. After the first couple shots my bare fingers so cold I could not hardly grab a ball out of my pouch. Any ways, what you see is my attempt for March, easy to beat.

At 25 the first 3 shots a nice group, way low, held up more for 4 and 5. Also way low at start at 50, held toward top of sheet for the other 3 shots. Some warmer day I will get some actual load development and sight adjustment on this rifle.
