Well fellas, I got the woodsrunner done in time for delivery at the CLA show. The owner has seen it so I can share with you all.

It’s not perfect, but I learned a lot and enjoyed the process. Looking forward to the next one.

Turned out very nice,Ethan. The carving around the cheek piece makes the rifle, simple but elegant.
Ok, now how did you age the lock and barrel? Well done.

I got a little weird with it. I used some Wildcat Valley browning solution, mustard, cleaning vinegar, and some salt. I took it off and put more on until I liked the look.

I used LaurelMtn Maple to ensure a warm hue.
Kibler Iron Nitrate, Kibler Bone Black to push the contrast.
Beck’s finishing oil and Becks finishing wax on top.

The client wanted something warm with age.

It really does have a warm and homey feeling to it I think. You captured a refined “primitive folk art” style carving at both ends of the cheep piece which looks just perfect.
I hope you do more 🙂

I did not thin it, I applied gently

I have a question for you'all that have, or have built, one of these rfiles....What do you think about the length of the barrel, 39" I beleive? does it look right for the gun?

I have been thinking of trying my hand at one of these kits for while but I generally go for a longer barrel, 42" or more. I do have an early Lancatser that has a 38" barrel. It's a nice rifle but to my eye, it has always looked a little short to me.
