Flintlock Parts
« on: April 08, 2024, 05:13:35 AM »
Looking for parts to repair this lock.  Gallagher, Dublin, ca 1820.  The cock is the type that is stopped by its chin coming to rest on the flashpan fence, not by a shoulder striking the top edge of the lockplate.  The frizzen spring had a roller.
I am sending photos with dimensions to Blackley in the UK; hopefully they might have something close.  Any suggestions for other possible sources?

Yes, it would be very much like that.  Overall plate length is 4.85".  Cock throw is 31mm, center of tumbler axis to edge of pan fence.
Some of the Texas Gun Trade parts look very promising.
I appreciate the suggestions.

I had to do a double take on reading your post. My first scan I thought you said "overflowing with lack of knowledge."

Of course, I was going to object as I thought I held that title!!

These are beautifful locks but for prolonged use the the double throated "cock" is better.Years ago in the shop of E,M.Farris I saw a fine lock like the one shown here that had a battered flash fence from the hard use it was never intended for to begin with. After so much battering the bridle is next.

The lock is from a 12ga shotgun.  It was obviously used quite a bit.  On the frizzen face, the first strike area can be felt, and the flashpan fence does have a slight dent.  Internally, the lock is in excellent condition.  Serious mainspring.
Incidentally, when acquiring a ml gun, it is a good idea to drop the rod down the barrel; this one stopped short about 2 3/4".  Got out some #5 or 6 shot, dried up disintegrating cloth, and I don't know what else.  Doesn't appear to be black powder.  The bore isn't half bad.  It has a plain hooked breechplug, with powder chamber is drilled into it, like a patent breech.  Flash hole has a silver coloured vent.  Clear now from vent into the powder chamber and bore.
