Lovely work, very graceful lines. This will make it into a great hunting rifle. When the hunting is slow going you will have something to look at and enjoy.

Every one has a favorite style. Some like early and some like latter styles. Some like southern, some like the English and some even like the percussion plains types. BUT every one likes to look at Quality work regardless of what style it is. THIS is such quality and it is enjoyable for all to view.  ;)

That is some really cool Pratt-School work there Ian.   I am intrigued by the description of weathering the stock.  I'll be interested to see how it all comes out.  God Bless,  Marc

Thanks everybody! I appreciate the comments. It will take a while to do the finish work, but I will definitely post some more photos when I have this one wrapped up.

Ian,

I am a long time admirer of your work.  With your permission I would like to replicate some of the carving you have shown on this rifle on one of my own to expand my carving experience and repertoire.  Do you have any additional pictures of the carving you are doing on this rifle ?

Thanks

David

The owner and a friend came and picked the rifle up yesterday. We had a nice little visit in the shop and they genuinely didn't seem to mind breathing the near toxic levels of garlic curing vapor in there on a 95 degree day. Thankfully the power didn't go out, we'd have been dead without that fan running

That is a pretty special rifle. If you don't mind; could you share the stain you used?  It is just a terrific piece.  Thank you.  JZ

Thank you -  i used some homebrew aquafortis of about 4-1 dilution. I also worked in a little dry pigment with the first layer of finish which gave some subtle color variation.

Exceptional for sure.I remember talking to Jud Brennan at the CLA show several years ago and he had an exceptional carved rifle waiting for the owner and I said "You could make six good hunting rifles in the time it took to make this one".He replied,MORE than 6.Even with modern lighting and razor sharp tools that has to be a very labor intensive job.I am not a wood worker but have made sever half stock caplocks similar to the Beck shown here recently and ONE J&S Hawken that passed Tom Dawson's scrutiny.
