My New Allen Martin Schimmel
« on: April 21, 2024, 07:55:36 PM »
My friend Allen delivered this to me at the Knoxville show. Classic Lehigh Schimmel fresh from his shop the same week. Very similar to an original rifle he bought along and displayed at his table. Haven't named her yet but she was clearly the Belle Of The Ball at the show IMHO. So maybe Belle is what I'll call her. Here's some pictures!

44 inch barrel in .45 caliber. I can hold it at arm's length with one hand like a pistol! From the shoulder it fits perfectly and swings easily.

I've taken a good look now here's some of my favorite things about this rifle. Style and architecture are appealing to my eye. I really like the flats on top of the butt. Wood and metal finish give it that same look as the original Lehigh Schimmel at the show. Now for the best part, what really makes it pop is the surface texture on brass steel and wood! Just the right amount of tool marks makes the whole gun believable as a Schimmel and many other fine examples of 18th century products. I keep holding it in good light and slowly turning it to catch the details. I hope to use some of what I've described in my own work going forward.

I seen it in his shop yesterday and week ago, it had a sealer coat or two, it looked pretty sweet even in that stage! Enjoy!!

I really like it. I've seen a couple of Allen's Shimmels, and he does an amazing job. The rest of us wanna be builders can only aspire to be half as good. I have a left-handed one waiting in the wings for me to attempt. Great job Allen and you got yourself a work of art, Daniel.

;) ;)... was great to see that rifle and YOU at the show.... Allen is a great guy and excellent builder... I always say that if I didn't like upper East Tennessee rifles so much, I would collect Lehigh Valley guns... this one is over the top... regards,.. Cades Cove Fiddler

Thanks for all of the interest including PMs about this rifle it truly is as nice as it looks.

Here's one more bit of information you may find interesting. The rifle weighs just under 6 lb 12 oz compare that to the average newborn baby born in the United States at 7 lb 6 oz!

Allen puts so much character into a plain rifle.

I love it
