L & I J White Tool Company was founded by Leonard and Ichabod Jewitt White in 1837. They incorporated in 1892. They made mostly edged tools but also made some machinery and were in business until 1928. I have a spokeshave made by them. It is one of the best cutting tools I’ve ever used. You can shave down a rifle stock in short order with much more control than a draw knife. The old tools had good carbon steel that would take a razor edge. If you are lucky you may find one of these at an antique tool sale or from a dealer online.

I believe that would be their No. 93 cooper's spoke shave.  See page 22 in their catalog.

The tools produced today don't come close to matching the quality of those of yesteryear.

Thanks for the link Bluenoser. I love working with old tools. I have several antique tools. Some of the ones I bought when I was young are becoming antiques. If you look at the old tools, handsaws and such, there was a charm that modern ones don’t have.

Did you notice there price in the catalog, $15.00 in 1912. That was not a cheap tool.

 15$ per dozen. So $1.25. Still not a cheap tool back then given wages at that time

True.  That would equate to about $40.00 in today's money, which sounds about right for the tool.
