My guess is Ash.  Hard to tell with the bark shown being a narrow sample.  But thats my thought.

Any chance it might be pecan?
I don’t know how the pecan looks in Iowa, but the Pecan trees I’ve had felled here have been dark pinkish in the heartwood. Very twisty in grain too, a nightmare to split.

Here's  the bark if it's any help.

Mike, that's Chinese elm bark. Lots of them around here, originally imported as a shade tree and get quite large. not as hard as black walnut and about the same density.

A couple yeas ago there was a thread in this forum about Elm for a gunstock. I’m not sure if Chinese Elm is comparable but there are some photos of the Elm stocked rifle unstained:

It looks like the old extinct American Chestnut floors I had in my previous house. The bark looks like what was on the basement floor joists that were also American Chestnut.

Here's what it looks like finished. Talked to the guy who cut the tree down. He said the leaves were identical to English walnut. The sap wood was bright yellow when freshly cut down.

Here are some pictures of my EW (American grown) blank. The clear finish was added to better show grain.

I have a 100% ID now, Amur Cork. The cork part of the name comes from the thick corky bark, the wood is quite dense and hard. It's an invasive species from Asia. (isn't everything?) The bark and cambium are medicinal. It's used to make furniture in Asia. Google it.
I'll be stocking up a gun or two with it as it's nice looking wood and hard.

Well, it looks pretty good quarter sawn and with curl. Some interesting color too.

Since it's an invasive species from Asia, does that mean it must be barreled with a metric bore size to work? ;)

Oh wow, nice blanks.  Carve it up nice now Mr. Brooks.

Glad we got that all straight. Saw 'em all to foil the invasion.

Japanese matchlocks perhaps?
Probably once a gun is stocked in this stuff most folks will assume it is curly ash.

Neither cactus nor bamboo.  Or Brazilian rosewood.

I'll stay with ash.

Top two are pretty wild. Bold grain even in the straight grained pieces.
Looking forward to a build or two, with them, Mikey. 8)

Beautiful wood, but looks nothing like the ash trees dying near me.  I cut and split a lot of dead ash for firewood, doesn’t have a strong smell, nothing like walnut.

Hopefully you post build pictures, that wood should look spectacular.

Somewhere above I think it was said it had a sapwood that was yellow. I’ve not seen ash with sapwood different than the heartwood.

Mike, if anybody can do the magic on this wood I’m sure you can. Should make for an interesting stock.
