English Walnut color variation
« on: May 16, 2024, 05:29:54 AM »
I am posting this in hope it may help builders understand European Walnut variations. In this photo are three examples of Juglans Regia, know my several names; English Walnut, French Walnut, Circassian Walnut and Turkish Walnut being the most common. They are all the same species of Walnut, give the names of the area in which the wood was harvested. I did't have an example of the pale or uniform brown to add to the group, but you can observe a wide range of colors in the three stocks in the photo. The object of my post is to state that is difficult to identify a Walnut specie by color alone. The small pores and heavier weight are two factors that assist in confirming identity. Odor is quite different between Juglars Regia and Black Walnut, often referred to as American Walnut.

There are many different colours for sure.
These are all English, I believe, including Curtis' Rifle.

What's the bore on that one, Curtis?
Wish i had more pictures of the Ferguson Taylor built, but alas, no.
It was a strikingly light one.
Oh forgot the shotgun he built.

Hi,
I love working with Juglans regia.  The examples show many different color shades and figure.
