Grinslade collection up for auction
« on: June 03, 2024, 05:28:04 PM »
I have heard that Ton's collection will be sold at auction in late June. Does anyone know this to be true?
Regards,
Al

It is times like these that I wish I had not purchased so much mediocre stuff.  There are some "one-gun collections" in there.
Thanks for sharing.

I did not like that set-up. I was bidding on one lot, and I was outbid. I went to the next lot, and it was sold. Everything I wanted was already sold. I thought it was going to be in order.  Oh well, I guess I don't know how to bid at a time auction.

Low on at least one. I got a bargain on a fowler I wanted. I think I lucked out. Several fetched $6-11k. One HVF went pretty low, but I was just happy with what I got.

Results are here. https://skinner.bonhams.com/auction/30233/historic-militaria-including-items-from-the-tom-grinslade-collection-and-rare-british-cavalry-and-naval-arms/

I think the prices were low overall. One could have gotten a very good fowler for little money. I bid on one gun and could not raise my bid. Internet glitch?

Not sure. I raised mine without issue.

I tried to get set up for bidding, but despite mt best efforts I could not get signed up. I was contacted about the issue the day after the auction ended.

I signed up 2 hours before it started. Got lucky and bought a gun real cheap.  Looks like some of these auctions are the way to get a decent deal these days.

Looks like this sort of auction is good for buyers, but not so good for sellers.

We need to review the total of the sales - some low, some on par and some high. I bid on a pistol estimated at $1,000 - $1,500, which I thought was low. It sold for $6,500. A friend bid on a fowler, and it also sold much higher than estimate.

It looks like more upcoming auctions are planned as online. I don't know if this is a cost savings approach, or some other benefit? We did not have any trouble adjusting or raising our bids. Probably want to get our max bid in an hour before an item closes, as the items are not closed sequentially. A new world! Bob

I think some of the HBF would have brought more if they were still for sale after the Erza Taylor kit was sold. I thought that the following lots were going to end 60 seconds after the previous. I was bidding on the ET, and it went into OT a few times. It went a little higher than I had set aside, so I had a couple of HBFs I was interested in; when I moved to them, they were already sold & for less than I would have bid. I have not heard anyone else experience this, so maybe I fooled around too long on the ET.  I am glad some people got some good deals & hope they enjoy them.
