A pair of old axes
« on: September 16, 2024, 03:18:57 AM »
These are not mine but the person they belong to is wondering if anyone might be able to put an estimate as the when they were made.  Look like common carpenters hatchets and my guess would be late 1800's to early 1900.

Can you see what looks like a different grain of texture at the edge and back a couple inches compared to the rest of the head? Any evidence of a weld when you look down at the eye?

All I have are photos but I do have a couple more.  I'll ask the owner.

Cool. Normally, the vast majority of axes I’ve seen that were purported to have been made before the Civil War show a wrought iron body and a steel bit that extends an inch or two up the cheeks. An axe with a poll designed to bd used as a hammer might be an exception. I’m not sure.
