Closing in on finishing up my first Woodbury school longrifle. This .50 caliber 38" long barreled rifle is stocked in curly ash. Hand made steel furniture. A bit more sanding and it will be time to finish up the forestock moldings, add lock and tang panels and carve it. This is going to be my new shooter. More photos to follow as I finish up this project.

I have given this rifle the name Bezalel. Bezalel was the chief artisan and was in charge of building the ark of the covenant. Bezalel was said to be highly gifted as a craftsman, showing great skill and originality in engraving precious metals and in wood-carving. He was also a master-craftsman, having many apprentices under him whom he instructed in the arts. My wife thought this was an appropriate name for a tribute rifle to Hershel House.

It is a large Siler built by Walter Cain. It is as smooth as a Swiss watch. I have had it in my collection for quite sometime just waiting for that special project.

Like most of us, I have been a student of Hershel's "Special Effects" for years. Going to have to go back in time and resurrect some of those "Old School" techniques.

Love the liberal use of German Silver. Been trying to restore an 1840 longrifle; my first experience with that metal. You do inspire!

Gaeckle; No plans to alter the lock, just polish, age and brown.
Craig Wilcox; All the silver is sterling, no German silver in any of my builds.
Metalshaper; No, this build only existed in my mind when we met up in Oregon.
Brian; The good Lord willing this gun will be with me in August.
stan57; The gun weighs 8lbs. 6oz.

Working on the carving this week. I have been pleasantly surprised on how it is going, considering it is ash.
