Finished a Dickert rifle
« on: June 26, 2024, 08:44:18 PM »
I recently finished this rifle, started last year in Jack Brooks's NMLRA class at Bowling Green.  44" .50 cal Rice C wt. Dickert barrel, Chambers Deluxe Siler lock, buttplate and trigger guard cast by Jack, other stuff made by me.  The stock is soft maple, the nicest figured I've ever used and it kept me stropping my chisels because it really liked to chip and tear out at the least provocation!

The rifle was patterned after an original Dickert, I believe it was in the Landis Valley display book (mine are all packed up, so not sure), the one with the "DC" and a number stamped on the barrel.  The patchbox pretty much follows the original, but I simplified the carving design. The lock is much smaller than on the original.

Anyway, comments and criticisms are welcomed - especially criticisms.  I don't often post rifles here, but I always appreciate when others do, to see how they did things, and to read what others have to say about them.  A posted rifle will look great to me, and the comments help me look at things with a more informed eye and hopefully help me do better work.

Thanks for looking!

I can't help with the details as I don't have the knowledge but I know good craftsmanship when I see it and what you did was executed so very well.  Outstanding!

Even with the lock being smaller, it fits right in and if you hadn't mentioned it, I would have never known. It is a fine rifle, one to be proud of. It will fit right in with the best collections in my opinion.

Well here goes, you asked for criticism especially. I feel as though  with your obvious talent ( rifle looks AMAZING!!) you could do  a better job with your wedding bands on your butt plate, rear entry thimble and trigger guard. I did the exact same thing as you until I was watching one of the best filers and asked him why mine don't look like his. He said my dimensions were off ( spacing of the wedding bands). I measured his and have since been very satisified with my wedding bands. I wish I could could make the rest of my guns like yours. Super job                  Steve
