Peter White 091229

Comments:

A wonderful Peter White rifle, probably as nice as we are likely to see.  I do wish there was a good closeup of the lock side and patchbox.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Peter White used distinctive details on his rifles. It would add greatly to the discussion of this rifle if better pictures of the interesting forestock inlays, patchbox and side plate, showing the engraving, were made available.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The two volutes on either side of the cheekpiece are of different styles, one being elongated toward the wrist, and the other rounded behind the cheekpiece. This difference in two volutes carved reasonably close together, with the front elongated volute flowing smoothly from the line that defines the front of the comb and wrist, while the rounded one to the rear fails to flow smoothly off the carving just above it, seems a little odd to me for a White rifle.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A good example of a Peter White rifle for the museum, but could be made a better example if additional photos of important details, particularly inlays, side plate and the patchbox that were cut and engraved by White, were included.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Certainly has great Peter White styling , but no detail can be seen . I would like to know is the lock signed PW .  also close up of patch box rear ramrod pipe lock bolt plate and other details . I see nothing that is a big question, I just don't see enough detail .

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have sent more photos to Nord. Each of the photos are high enough pixels so that if you download the pictures and enlarge you can see the dust in the engraving.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a very pretty Peter White rifle with a lot of fine traits peculiar to White and would be of great interest to many viewers and builders.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The lock is signed "PW".

A very good example of Whites work

Certainly a Bedford-made [or at least Bedford style] White -- as opposed to hsi MD style earlier and reversion to MD style after 1818 in Uniontown. Thus, one can date this c.1803 when he first came to Cumberland Valley Twp., Bedford Co., from Emmitsburg, MD -- and 1818 when he left for Uniontown. This is most like early John White [Peter's son] of any Peter White I have seen. That large incised line behind cheekpiece is seen on some of White's Bedford fowlers. That inlay below cheek- piece we thought of as a bird in flight coming towrd you. It's seen on many White guns.
