Barrel Inletting Services ?
« on: August 13, 2024, 09:14:07 PM »
I used to send barrels & stock wood to Dave Rase for inletting and ram rod whole drilling.  Since his dust up with the US Poastal system about them almost systematically destroying stocks, Dave has understandably stopped doing that work.  I have a few barrels & stocks I need inletted (and I'm way too smart to do that work by hand any longer).  Just wanted to ask for any recommendations for current providers of that kind of work.  Thanks in advance...

Both Dave and Mark use the same method to inlet a barrel and both do a good job. On a precarve, Mark takes the time to sand all the cutter lines off. I take my hat off to both as well as Make Wheland for his work. We should feel lucky to have this guys in our corner, otherwise a lot of muzzleloader parts would still be sitting in the corner. Dave Rase has also helped a lot of many of our relatively small group to get the job done

I shudder to think what the shipping will be.  I sent a barrel and half stock blank to Dave Keck about 5 yearss ago and the shipping was $250 from TN and back.

I have had several inlet barrels for me over the years and never had anyone do any better than Mark Weded, highly reccomend him. He can inlet for late Ketland locks maybe others by now. Rice will ship barrels direct to Mark which saves a little on shipping fees, other barrel makers will probably do the same.

Sometimes Mark has some stock wood on hand so you might check if you need to buy wood.

Dennis

If you are still looking at getting your barrels inletted, I can take care of you. I have had good luck with the USPS and the rates are reasonable. I just sent one out to Oregon and the cost was 75 dollars with 500 dollars insurance. I have wood available also. I will need the barrels to profile. Let me know if your interested. My turn around time is about a week to ten days. Let me know what you have and I can quote it for you.   Bill

Sounds like we all need to pack and ship things with the understanding that the shipper will try to destroy it.  Express shipping in a solid wood box works.  Apple Air tags are a very good idea too.

I have gotten to old and crippled to do any more gun building and still have a couple of stock/barrel combos that I hope to finish some day so I do not need anymore barrel in-letting done. But I do want to let folks know about a less expensive shipping service. Try  https://www.pirateship.com

I have used them for years and their rates/ins are quite a bit cheaper than other services. They ship via USPS or via UPS. You enter shipping info i.e. weight, address etc and they give you rates using USPS or UPS you chose which one you wish to use then pay them for shipping and printout a shipping label for your package. The have package picked up or drop it off at Post Office or UPS store. I have never had any problems using this company and have saved a lot of money over the years. Oh, you can use USPS flat rate boxes for smaller items.

I have to second what Dennis said about Pirate Ship.  I started using it a few years back on a recommendation from Dennis here the forum, and have since saved a great deal on shipping, both muzzle-loader related and otherwise.
