Cracked Stock Fix?
« on: September 13, 2024, 05:55:26 PM »
Greetings all, a few years ago I ordered a Chambers Silver Virginia rifle kit. While building it I later noticed a hairline crack running from the center of the butt plate down to the bottom center of the rear stock. The crack appeared to be only on the lock side. I'm not sure if it came that way or if it developed from being to tight in the vise. I took responsibility for it and purchased a new one from Chambers. Anyway long story short this stock has been standing in a corner for 5 years so I want to attempt to salvage it because its a great piece of wood. Any suggestions on a repair? I was thinking of drilling and gluing a wooden dowel down from under the top of the butt plate at an angle. Or should I use screws? Should I scrap it and make knife handles out of it ? lol . Just wondering if anyone has had success with this type of repair.  I will post some pics later.

Thanks
       Scott

I know Brownells used to sell long brass screws for that purpose. They used them on military rifles to repair cracks.

The patchbox recess will determine.  First, long pieces of all thread, see drawing.  The brownells brass kind is great.  I also use 6-32 all thread from the hardware store.  Pre-drill with an aircraft length bit, and fill the length of it with epoxy and the rod.    The butplate and toe plate can cover the rods.

Second is to insert a slab of maple with the grain oriented up and down.  A morticing or horizontal boring machine will be helpful to remove the material.  IF you run into the  patch in the bottom of the patch box it will not be as big a deal as the all thread.

Does the crack run through the patch box recess?  For thin areas that break I have used perforated plates of steel or brass with many small holes.  Bed it in epoxy.  It may be possible to insert that in the bottom of the patchbox and cover it with a thin piece of maple.

Pictures are needed.   I am wondering about the grain layout.  It may be such that the toe is very weak.

When I've fixed cracks in stocks I take a good wood glue, add\mix just enough water to the glue to allow it to flow through a hypodermic needle. Remove the needle from the syringe, suck up the glue\water mix, then using whatever best method I can, shove the needle as far into the crack as I can. Being very careful to not break the little needle.

Then I inject the glue until it runs out of all the other parts of the crack. A longer crack may take two or even three injections. Then clamp, or rubber band tightly the stock and leave it sit for three days.

I've never had one re-crack doing this.

Depending on what is going on one can flow CA glue into the crack.  That may mess up staining.  Might want to stain first with AF to avoid a white area.

SCOTA4570===  Right idea. I have done this. I used a 3 step fix.First pull the butt plate. Next under the plate (so you will not see the pins)  drill a 1/8" deep by 1/8" dia drill dent into the center of the crack. #2 put a drop or 3 of superglue liquid (not jell) in the dent. It will wick down into the crack. Let it cure for a day.Do not over do the glue or it will come out the sides and you will see it. Next day from under the plate drill across the crack and glue a hard wood pin in .More latter.
