Just traded for this … I’d sure love to get some information from Mike about the build, inspiration and any info he, or perhaps even others, may recall, thank you!

All of my muzzleloaders will shoot into one ragged hole ALL DAY LONG ... it's just the 2nd or 3rd & other shots that tend to open up my groups ... !

They sure change hands quick before finding a new permanent home. I wouldn't mind owning that one myself. It would save me from having to make another.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Nice score - really like the looks of that rifle, too. Would also love to hear a bit more about the inspiration from Mike too. I’m more of a fowler guy than a rifle guy, but looks to me like a couple steps in between an early Germanic jaeger rifle and a more typical later PA longrifle?

If you search the gunbuilding section of the forum with “Oerter” and “Christians Spring” you’ll find many examples of the work done by Oerter and his mentor Albrecht; much of it in the 1770-1776 era but some earlier into the 1760s. Dating on the “Marshall rifle” is uncertain but it looks much like Germanic rifles of 1750s plus or minus. The Moravians near Allentown had a community with a numbers of craftsmen including gunsmiths. You can look up “Moravian gunmakers” and find recent books on them and their guns. Among the best documented early Pennsylvania gunmakers.
