Different set trigger idea, outside picture link added.
« on: September 23, 2024, 08:13:57 PM »
Different to me anyway.  I do not like single set triggers.  I had an accidental discharge at the last pistol shoot with one.

For pistols, having the firing trigger at the rear is a must.  I was doodling and came up with the attached.  The rear trigger fires set or unset.  The front trigger pushes forward to set it.  This seems very simple to me.    Am I missing something?  I must me re-discovering the idea.

So you’d push the front trigger forward to set it, right? I like it!

Yes, that seems safer and easier to make.  IT also does not require setting it to come to full cock.  How high the kicker moves would have to be planned to prevent smacking the front of you trigger finger.

I looked at it and it is very close to a prototype I made a long time ago.

Would the trigger have to be set in order to bring the hammer to half cock?

The lock and trigger will have to be "tuned"to work together and a lock with a two position tumbler and a fly should be used. The release bar on the spring driven trigger should have no contact with the sear other than at the moment of contact. The deep curve on that front trigger can be altered to make it easier to set.

No, it is just a different layout of a regular double set trigger.

Let’s keep discussion of modern cartridge guns in the personal message arena. That way you can help but not detract from our focus.
Thanks.

There is a Willam Buckele rifle with this trigger arrangement. You set the main rear trigger by pushing the front trigger forward. It took me a moment to understand what I was looking at. There was no room to get your finger between the front trigger and the trigger guard bow.

Get rid of that steep curve in the front trigger, flatten it a bit and checker the lower part. The strike on the sear arm can be regulated with the screw that holds it to the bar.

I thought I had seen that somewhere but I couldn’t remember.

Steve " Bookie" Bookout had an original and had made a copy of the one in the drawing. Bookie told me he thought , it would work well for caring the rifle and push forward with your thumb to cock and then fire with your index finger.
As to where he got the original from, I have no idea, it used to be on his bench , I haven't seen it in years.

Farrow and Sharps used similar concepts on rifles that followed the period of interest for this forum. Winchester also used their ccdst on the 1885 which would solve the wide spacing issue on a pistol. Im sure there are analogs from the longrifle era too.
