What would have been the effect of using tannic acid first, then Ferric Nitrate?

I used FN on curly ash and upon blushing I got a dark brown, almost black. It was on an SMR with iron furniture so it turned out OK.

Nice Jim. I really liked the middle one, personally.

I'm not sure what the tannic acid would do.  Might have to give it a try to see...

Is there any way to tell if a mature Ash tree might have curl like you can with a maple ? I'll be cutting down many of them soon because they are all dead or dying because of EAB. I'm afraid they're going the way of the American Elm. I'd hate to cut a tree into firewood only to discover than that is has curl.

Ripple under the bark is a good clue.  Better yet, cut a cookie two or three inches long from the small end of the log (highest on the tree) and split it.  If it has curl the break will be wavy.  You can judge the intensity and how deep into the tree the curl goes with this method.  You can also evaluate the curl intensity in the slab sawn and quarter sawn direction.
