We may be able to find a "second" stock that will meet your $1000 budget.  Mention we were talking on ALR.

Thanks
Jim

Wow! That would be awesome! I will holler at you. Thank you

Buy a "kit" that will tax your skills. In a world of "on demand" and "cookie cutter" it is a good thing to actually have some skin in the game so to speak. I agree with Eric Krewson wrt the lock. Every rifleman should not only be able to inlet his lock, but be able to tune and service it. Plus it makes alignment so much easier Carving on your stock should be seen as icing on the cake along with the brass and iron fitting!.....Get Chuck Dixon's book, and gather up your hand tools!

I don't mind working for it at all.

Hello, I'm new here and am considering building a rifle. Really looking into a pecatonica river set. What are y'all's thoughts? Also I'm not sure on which style I'll be going for. Planning to build it next year, so doing research now. I'm pretty new to all this although I do have some woodworking and metal work experience and have thrown together a traditions kit.

For a first gun I’d recommend a Kibler kit if they suit your needs. Then you will have a good idea example of correct architecture. For a future project. Any of the other part sets require much stronger skill sets. A quality lock and barrel is paramount, then proper architecture. Best of luck.BJH

As a FYI, Pecatonica has an on-line PDF Catalog that's current.
http://www.longrifles-pr.com/Catalog2023_PecRiver.pdf

You could get a Half-stock percussion rifle kit for about $800. It's certainly a bit more work than a snap-together kit, however.

As with any build, the way a project turns out depends on the quality of the parts and the skill of the builder. PR has good parts and wood, their kits require more work and skill than a Kible kit. You will have to do some inletting, locate and drill holes, drill and tap lock and tang bolts, fit butt plate, trigger guard, pipes, side plate and nose cap. You will have to finish shaping the stock. If you can do all of that a PR kit will make a very nice rifle.

I built this rifle from parts that a customer got from PR.

There is no doubt that a parts set can be made in to a beautiful rifle.  That assumes the precarve stock is not defective, many are unusable.  Precarve stocks are inconsistent and have serious quality control issues.  If you cut on it you own it.  I have made fire wood of two so far.

I STRONGLY encourage Snakeman to take Jim Kibler up on is generous offer.  Find the money.  The resulting rifle will rival or exceed many "custom" builds in quality and design.  IF care is taken to finish it properly he will have the equivalent of a high end custom rifle that would cost many thousands to have built.  The CNC lock is better than you you will buy from other vendors that use cast parts.  All the mass market locks use cast parts.  They are not just a little better, the difference is huge.

The outfits that offer parts are actually parts bundlers.  They shop the parts for you.  They do not make anything.  There are a few exceptions but the quality is no better.  I would only buy a kit from Kibler and Chambers today.  For anything else I'd build form scratch and source my own cast parts and make the rest.  This is not for a beginner.

I also encourage you to contact Jim Kimber. You will not be disappointed that you did. Jumping into a kit just because it "fits" your pocketbook is something you will come to regret. Kimber is the way to go for your first or even last flintlock rifle hands down. Once you got that rifle assembled and finished you will be VERY HAPPY. In less than two weeks (depending on your skill and time working on it) you will be on the range shooting it with a BIG SMILE on your face ;D.

That looks great. I can locate holes and drill and tap. No problem. I guess what y'all are saying is get one now and then save up and get another the next year lol

Your choice probably depends on whether you’re looking to build a gun and learn a lot of skills and normal troubleshooting, or quickly assemble and finish a very fine gun.

I think you are being generous with the phrase "normal trouble shooting".

I think you will be much happier with one of Jim Kibler kits than one of the other kits that can quite often frustrate you so much that it takes the fun out of building I would save the PR kit for a second build after you have
put together one of the Kiblers kits. I have put together 4 Kibler kits, each one was a joy to assemble and made dependable, great shooting rifles. I only built 1 PR kit but I spent a lot of time working around problems and removing large amounts of excess wood, when finely finished, it was a good rifle but I spent a long time on it and at the time I had the experience of building 20 - 25 of my Gillespie rifles which are basicly a kit of parts that require quite a bit of work to finish.

Your choice probably depends on whether you’re looking to build a gun and learn a lot of skills and normal troubleshooting, or quickly assemble and finish a very fine gun.

For "a few dollars more" you will have a fine looking great operating rifle that you can put together in the time frame you want.

Doing a "rush job" on a flintlock rifle shows on the final product.

I have had bad luck with pre-carves from the P place, two pre-carves, one was flawed, it had 1/8" of wood left on one side of the barrel channel and 3/4" of wood left on the other side. but because I was building a very slender TN rifle, I could make it work. The other had at least 12 major flaws that took me months to fix and then only if you don't look too closely.

My gun building best friend bought 7 pre-carves from them, 5 were perfect, 2 had issues.

Buying a kit from Kibler eliminates the $#@* shoot possibility.

Grand Valley Cap and Ballers Muzzleloaders Club, near Dorr, Michigan, held a Squirrel Shoot on Saturday Oct 26th, 2024.   Great weather and a great time was had by all attending.   The gentleman that took Aggregate First Place was using one of Mr. Kibler's rifles.

Well, you got enough good advice here to go forward, but I judge it easier on your working process to get a couple of videos that will help you.

Jim Turpin or Ron Ehlert  have great vids  that deal with assembling a kit

Golden Mean (on YouTube), Peter Alexander ( Grenville County) and  Hershel House have series' on building from scratch and you can't go wrong with The Grumpy Gunsmith ( also on YouTube)

Wallace Gusler has a beauty on How to carve and Jack Brooks has one on same that beats the band.

These will also do in watching just for fun....Theyve helped me prevent a lot of butchery...

I should also warn you if you fail to post pictures of your progress here then the administrators are going to make you wash all our cars.
