My Rendition of a SMR in Birdseye Marble Maple
« on: November 16, 2024, 11:16:36 PM »
This is my latest version of a SMR, 48 inch 40 caliber, half stock with birds eye marble maple stock. That is some of the toughest wood I have ever worked.

Nice piece of work!! But I am not sure the stock wood is birds eye maple?  It looks more like flame maple?  Anyway nice figure!! HT.

For sure, there are places in this stock that won't even cut a chip the wood just crumbles. The inlay in the stock is a 1809 1/2 cent, it has a neat liberty head on it. I know not many old settlers wasted their money putting it in their rifle but I cant imagine in this day and age getting a half a penny back in change.

Unique; nice. The effect of the light wood against the silver color of the cap piques my interest. Imagine it with darkened and rubbed back silver plated butt, guard, pipes...   I've been pinging people in here about this very combination...

Thanks to everyone for the comments. Here is a couple of full length pictures. The barrel is a 48 inch,  3/4 inch, 40 caliber Rice. So it is not real heavy, and holds pretty good. The under rib is steel but I have been thinking about changing to a wood rib which will shave a few ounces of weight off the end of the barrel. To answer the why did you do that, I have seen a few originals with 48 inch barrels and wanted to do something different. Anyway you know what they used to say about the guy with the longest barrel.

Ha, seating a ball, I'm getting older so I have to take a rest about the middle of the barrel.
