Cutting the teeth on cock
« on: December 04, 2024, 09:08:23 PM »
Can someone direct me to the fairly recent post that showed a fixture to hold the cock and top jaw while chiseling in the teeth. I cannot locate it.
Thanks

For sale posts disappear after a period of time. I’m pretty sure that’s where it was.

I hold the flint cock in a Woodcraft vise that has wooden jaws with a soft plastic veneer on them. For the underside of the top jaw I screw it into a piece of hardwood and clamp that in the vise.

Rich thanks for the reply, I was pretty sure the holding fixture I saw was made for personal use and not for sale......of course I could be all wrong.

Rich, also I did screw top jaw to a pc. of hardwood, the the jaw walked all over using a die sinker chisel. May J-b weld it on along with the screw and try tomorrow.

I use a square graver and make 3 rows of teeth, all with the fangs pointing backwards toward the screw. If it walks, I put a small wood screw on either side of the top jaw.

I did this with my top jaw. I used what I think i remember to be a piece of redwood fence post from Lowe's or home depot. It worked well because it's relatively soft but not so soft that the anchoring screw would end up stripping. With it being a little softer, I was able to get the top of the top jaw imprinted into the surface of the wood a bit which helped prevent it from wanting to walk around.

I did three-ish rows, alternating the direction in each row. One away from the screw, one towards the screw, etc. it works very well.

Hi,
I do this on every gun.  For the top jaw, I carve a depression in a piece of wood to hold the top side of the jaw. I then screw the jaw in the wood tightly.  The wood is just a tiny bit bigger across than the top jaw or sometimes the same width. I place the wood and jaw in my machinist vise so the top jaw is just below the top of the vise jaws.  Then I cut the teeth in with a round bottomed die sinker's chisel.  When I do that, the jaw inevitably moves to one side as I cut teeth on the other side but it hits the vise jaw and goes no further.  Then I cut the other side of the face and it rotates to the opposite side stopping at the vise jaws.  Works great and I don't have to fuss with gluing or some other involved method of holding it.

These holding fixtures were shown for engraving.

Great idea and can be made with minimum outlay of cash.Reminds of a comment I made about not liking tools and machinery that's smarter than I am.A friend,Sylvia Thompson heard the remark and said,"That would include any wind up  toy ever made".Now you all know why She is closer than any sister could ever be to me and now 84 and can pass for 50.

PHD Brewer, thank you you for showing these fixtures, they are the ones I was looking for.
Forgot they where for engraving, very fine work indeed. My mill has been idle, so guessing I should make up a set.

I also use a wooden form, shaped to accommodate the parts.  I use Bondo to make a solid gluing base for the parts against the wood.
