Want to engage a rifle maker
« on: December 25, 2024, 04:27:09 AM »
Happy Christmas Eve.

I’ve been a member for a little while but never post.  Just read and learn.  In the library is a beautiful rifle built by Joseph Bogle. I would like to engage a rifle builder to re create that rifle for me please.  If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Patrick Thomas.

Hi Patrick,
That's a fine rifle.
I'd suggest you talk to Brian Barker. He is on here as "B.Barker". He understands the style and he is a good blacksmith.
I'll send you his personal contact in a Private Message.

PS: Merry Christmas!

Hi Patrick,

Welcome to ALR.  Per ALR rules posted in this section, "New members may post WTB (want to buy) ads as soon as they are granted membership. WTB ads MUST have either a maximum limit on what you want to pay or a simple range i.e. $25 - $75 for the right item. Our requirement for posting what you expect to pay has a reason; it keeps members with $3K rifles from wasting time contacting someone looking for a $1K hunting rifle and vice versa."

Please post a maximum amount or range you are willing to pay for the rifle you seek.  Thanks.

;) ;).. Happy Christmas, Patrick... !!! ... do add to your post a dollar amount that you consider as an estimate of what     you might pay, and add your location... a lot of great builders see these posts, and might be someone near you who could do a great job... Best wishes,.... Cades Cove Fiddler....

Merry Christmas,

Alas, I am so right handed I can’t even scratch my nose with my left hand.   I have no idea what a rifle of that caliber (pun intended) is worth but I am willing to pay what it’s worth.   So, $3500 range?

Patrick.

Merry Christmas Gus.
I am pretty good at making rifles but extremely bad at using computers and understanding the cyber world.
SO when  you say "in the library" I for one have no idea what you are talking about.  And I bet I am not alone, so when you post a request like this I'd suggest you also post a link of some reference to allow us to look at what you are looking at.

PM me if you'd like to talk.
And have a happy new year too.

My best friend is the current Joe Bogle, his 5th great grandfather made the original Bogle rifle. Joe has been a rifle builder and luthier for most of his adult life but just found out about his grandfather about 20 years ago.

He took measurements from the original Bogle rifle at the Museum of Appalachia years ago and started replicating them, he forged all of the mounts and even the lock plate, he used modern internals on his locks.

Here he is with the original rifle.

Because so many of his friends that he built rifles for didn't shoot flint he made a number of the rifles in percussion, he even gave me one.

Unfortunatelyy, Joe is 82 and battling serious prostate and bladder cancer, he is scheduled to get everything removed at Vanderbilt in the near future.

It looks like his gun building days are over.

Gus, That's a very nice looking rifle, pretty straight forward with no carving and minimum decoration, so shouldn't be too expensive to recreate.

Steve sz, here is a link to the Bruce Miller Virtual Library and Museum; https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?board=21.0
If you didn't know this was available, you've missed a huge part of this forum!

Mods, I know this isn't the right place for this Museum info, but couldn't think of a better place to lead Steve, and others, to it.

Gus and SZ,
If you go to the home page (click on "home" at the top left), then scroll down toward the bottom, you will find 6 different sections of library. Lots of photos of cool old stuff. Just have to poke around a bit to learn how stuff is organized.

Correct that there is no carving or fancy inlays, but there is some pretty detailed iron work and triggers there. Perhaps also a custom lock plate, or the whole lock is a possibility. So you will need to talk with the builder to see what price range will work. Custom hand forged iron is considerably more expensive than cast stuff. (Just saying. Spoken from the perspective of a blacksmith gunbuilder.)

Whetrock:  the lock on that rifle looks to me like a L & R John Bailes flintlock.

Yeah, they are quite similar. I've seen a couple of Bogle style rifles built around that L&R lock. I don't know anything about the quality, but I think it's a good-looking lock.

I will second Brian Barker for a builder for your rifle. I doubt anyone could do a better job on a rifle of that style, Brian is a top shelf rifle builder.

L&R has had quality control issues with the internal mechanisms on their line of locks due to indifferent attitudes about quality control from the foundries they dealt with and were told "We do production,NOT quality control.
I have heard nothing lately about them and hope they were able to locate a foundry that will do  a better job.The mechanism IS the lock
or engine.I made a lot of locks on L&R plates but used my own bench crafted mechanisms and then sent the locks to Germany and other
countries in Europe.A Chambers late Ketland if a good lock and may or may not be the right style for this particular job.I stopped nearly all shop work in 2019 and have no desire to restart.

There are a lot of great builders, but Brian Barker is my absolute favorite. A lot of builders you just can't get on their list or they're in some form of retirement. If Brian's willing to build you a gun, then I would jump on it.
