Video: Iron Nitrate on Different Wood Samples
« on: January 05, 2025, 04:54:11 PM »
Many posts here are about the potential coloration of different woods with iron/ferric Nitrate or aqua Fortis.  This video shows a number of common stock woods with iron Nitrate applied at different concentrations.

The video producer uses a product he calls Rubio Oil.  A visit to the Rubio site shows an indoor and outdoor formulation.  Has anyone used this product on a rifle stock?

I couldn't get the video to load.
These two rifles were finished at the same time, with the same nitrate and blushing.

That's the "curse" of iron nitrate.  It gives exceptional depth and makes the grain really pop, however there is no telling in advance what color it will come out.

Really interesting vid. Thanks for sharing.
I did some tests myself a while ago.
I think iron nitrate ( in my case Aqua fortis) works great on maple and birch.
On walnut it depends: with a lot of figure in the stock and much scrubbing it back it may be acceptable though it is still quite dark.
On teak combined with some tannic acid it's great to get a nice aged worn look.

Walnut:

Teak:

I found the reference to different concentrations interesting.  Anyone else experimented with different ferric nitrate concentrations and what were the results?  Have a cherry project that will be aged on the bench and thinking ferric nitrate might be a good starting point.

In my experience, home made iron saturated aquafortis ebonizes cherry. This can be very good for things like powder horn spout plugs and such.

I want dark/aged but not ebonized.  Will have to proceed with caution, if at all.  There is always fuming.
