Hatchet

Thimble Farm:
I would appreciate any comments on this hatchet head which I received for Christmas. Painted red at one point but hand forged. Very similar in size/weight to 36.A in Swords and Blades of the American Revolution.  Collar is stamped "A".  Also a "US" mark? 

Is the "A" an armory mark or acceptance mark? Thank you
