Early '70's Contemporary Builder "A.L.M."
« on: January 14, 2025, 02:04:39 AM »
Dropped off to me for repairs recently was a handsome and finely built Mountain Rifle stocked in Black Walnut.  It's .36 cal. with a Bill Large barrel, Bob Roller lock stamped "72" with his name on the back of the plate, nicely hand forged butt plate, guard and thimbles.  There is some modest engraving on the finales of the guard and the barrel tang.   Some incised carving behind the check plate and moldings along the ram rod channel of the upper forestock round out the decorative work on the piece.  The top flat is engraved in nice script A.L.M.  The owner says he purchased this rifle in Tennessee in 1972, never met the builder nor does he know who it was.  This is some really nice work on this rifle, would like to know who this builder was.  If anymore has idea, please let me know.  Thanks.  P.S. - about pictures - I haven't posted any as I haven't got a go ahead from the owner to do so.  If there is interest in photos, and he agrees to let me post some, I'll add some shots later.

Greetings and welcome aboard
Builder is most likely
A Leonard Meadows of Fayetteville Wv
Do a search on here of his name. I have one of his fancy guns.
He almost exclusively used Roller locks and Large barrels
Cheers

Yup, Mr. Meadows is the builder of that rifle.  Confirmed it from a previous post with a shot showing his initial engraving which is the same as on this one.  I had heard of Leonard Meadows work, seen a couple of them over the years and thought initially that this rifle would be one of his but, that "A" in the initials threw me.  Thanks for the post and information!

Heres some more info.
Mr Meadows was corresponding and maybe working with Hacker Martin from Tenn/Virginia
He, ALM may have built it for Hacker. Just a guess but its not unusual for WV builders to make one for their mentors
Did you find pics of my ALM rifle?
Best regards

Yes, I did locate those shots of your ALM, nice looking piece.  I'll see if I can get some shots posted of this one I have on hand.  The ALM rifle that is pictured in the last post here:https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=9667.msg496351#msg496351 is very close to the rifle I have n the shop at the moment.  Main difference, that rifle has a banana patchbox, the one I have currently has a double grease hole.  Really impressed with the workmanship Mr. Meadows was doing 50+ years ago.

Leonard Meadows for sure,He kept a standing order with me for locks and triggers. He made me a plain and simple walnut full stock with trim from a wrecked antique I got from Bill Large with one of his barrels.Someone on this forum now owns it.Thanks for reviving memories of long gone times and people.

There seemed to be some interest in seeing this L. Meadows rifle - a few non-professional shots.

I think it was George Suiter who called and told me Len Meadows passed away.George went on to become a top craftsman at Colonial Williamsburg. He also told me that Len was in an ambulance that could not pass a car that refused to honor the lights and siren and would not mover over on a narrow road.
