Lehigh Pistol completed
« on: January 13, 2010, 04:58:23 AM »
Hey folks,
I've been home from college on winter break for the past 3 and a half weeks, and I've spent a lot of time in my shop (to my parents' frustration) building this small pistol.  I started out with the intention of basing it off an original rifle attributed to Claus, but I tweaked it from the original as I went.  Has a 4.5" long 50cal rifled barrel I got from Tommy Bruce on the forum a while back, set into a sugarmaple blank from a neighbor's tree that came down several years ago.  It's finished with madder pigment mulled into varnish (tru-oil in this case, didn't have sunlight or time for the real stuff).  It make a sort of thick paint consistency, but goes on translucent, so it doesn't mask the wood grain.  It's been rubbed back in wear areas to reveal the amber color of the wood with a light coat of AQF sealed with shellac.
I fly back to Asheville for school on Sunday, so this was a quick and fun project to do.  Any thoughts or constructive critique would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,
-Eric

I like it a whole bunch Eric!  The architecture is great, and your incised carving, especially behind the breech and tang is bold and solid.  That one should make you smile for lots of years to come.
And good use of your time too.

Hey Eric-What a great job you have done on this little pistol. It is as fine a one as I have ever seen. Better give up school in favor of building guns. More money these days, probably.
Can't wait to see what you build next. Good luck in all of your endeavors.

Great little pistol and a nice job.  I really like the intersection of the trigger guard and entry pipe.

Eric:
Very nice job on this pistol.  I really like the octagon to round barrel and the side plate.  Also like that you decided to add a simple butt cap.  Just seems to put it all together.  Steve C.
p.s. Hope all is well at school. Will we see you at Lewisburg in Feb.?
