Builders Smith and Cravener
« on: January 19, 2025, 12:21:27 AM »
Received this nice, very long .50 Lehigh style rifle with Smith and Cravener in script. It has a 47" swamped barrel. Balances well. Looking for information on builders. TIA.

Big Sky,

Possible match for the Cravener half of the duo?

That is Phil Cravener's script.  Latrobe, Pa.  One of the nicest men I ever knew.  A great friend to all.

Second that. Definitely Phil Cravener of Latrobe, PA. Phil was great engraver and maker. Always willing to help.

Can't help on the Smith side of things. Call Old Westmoreland Rifles (a club he was heavily involved in) or send them an email. They could probably point you in the right direction

There was a fellow member at "Old Westmoreland Rifles" named Elwood "Whitey" Smith, but I do not believe that would be him?  Actually he recently passed away in 2024.
OWR is helping host the annual Bushy Run gun show this coming weekend.  Might be someone there could help?
Search facebook if you can, the have a FB page.  I'd tell you what it is but I am terrible at navigating this thing!
Best of luck

I have a Phil Cravener screwtip map horn showing PA forts, towns, and the routes taken by Braddock, Forbes, and Bouquet.  Its very well done.

As to Smith, I'm waiting to hear back from Old Westmoreland Rifles.
