SMR buttplate dimensions
« on: February 04, 2025, 11:32:05 PM »
I'm starting on a .32 SMR, inspired by some Ambrose Lawing rifles, and the plans drawn by Ron Borron.  I'm using a Rice A weight barrel, 15/16 breech.  I can't find any reference to Lawing buttplate widths. I have a couple cast plates, one 1 1/8" and another 1 5/16."  The small one looks more hand forged, but I'm concerned it'll be too skinny, although I want a slim gun. The smallest on the KRF CD (no Lawings) are 1 1/4", which is probably a clue, but thought I'd ask anyway.  Anyone have one or measurements from one? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Do you have Randal Pierce's book? Kentucky Rifles of the Great Smoky Mountains.

That book has measurements, including butt plate, maximum width. The book does not include any Ambrose Lawing rifles, but the comparisons may be useful to you.

It had been out of print, but he just contacted me last week and said the next printing is out.  I have one coming.
