Here is one that I just picked up. Some marks on there. One side seems like a "X". other side maybe broad arrow?
4.6 inches x 2.5 inches, 15 oz.

That one is a real hand forged hatchet. Can easily see the welded wedge in the eye and the welded steel bit. Markings are often mostly obliterated on these old items.

According to the typology by Kevin Gladysz & Ken Hamilton here

that "choil" (the nub/step on the bottom) profile looks French in origin.
