Simpson-Augusta County VA (later Botetourt County)
« on: January 15, 2010, 01:33:00 AM »
Circa 1740's, don't have my notes, James Simpson was living next to William Gillespie in the Cowpasture River valley of VA. William was the father of my gunmaker GGG GF John Gillespie. William Gillespie's wife, Mary, is thought to be either the sister or daughter of James Simpson.

This James Simpson is probably the father of ? Simpson that was involved with the gun manufacturing operation near Staunton VA during the Rev War.

I am seeking more information on the early VA Simpson's that lived in the Cowpasture River Valley circa 1740-1785. I would appreciate any and all information that you might have.

Thanks
Dennis

Do you have this?

--- Simpson. gunsmith. 1784, Williamsburg. [M.E.S.D.A.]

Alexander Simpson. arms contractor. 1777, Augusta County; Staunton, 1782-84 [M.E.S.D.A.].

House of Delegates. May 1777. A Petition of Joshua Humphreys, Joshua Perry, Alexander Simpson and Jacob Gabbott, was presented to the House, and read, setting forth, that they were among the first who undertook the manufactory of fire arms in this State, and that they were actuated in this by a desire to assist the country, at that time greatly distressed for those articles, at the same time expecting to receive sufficient [money] to support their large and growing families; that they have put themselves to great trouble and expense in erecting proper works for carrying on the said business, although they have been much retarded by the difficulty of getting hands and procuring materials; notwithstanding which they are now able to furnish [the] government with 9 stand of arms per week, equal as they expect, to any yet produced; but as that every necessity for carrying on the said business is now raised to double and treble what it was heretofore, they pray their case may be taken into consideration, and such further encouragement given them as shall be thought just and reasonable.

Dennis - there is a famous rifle that is signed "Thomas Simpson" that was made for Caspar Mansker, ca: 1790.  The rifle has one of the most beautiful captured lid patchboxes ever made and he is believed to be linked to the same group of Tennessee and Kentucky gunmakers that included Jacob Young.  I would be very interested in anything that turns up tieing him to the Simpsons referenced in Virginia.

Yes I do have that information. I got it from your book "Gunsmiths of Virginia).

Hopefully I can find more Simpson family genealogy in the Virginia State archives the next time I am there.

Thanks

Guy,
Yes I think you told me about this rifle earlier. Thomas Simpson may well be of the same family as James Simpson who lived on the Cowpasture River of VA but I have not been able to find info on him. I just need to spend more time in the state of VA archives.
