How do any of you think the old timers kept there pewter nose capes? Did they let them get dull or did the keep them shined like a new dollar?

Probably a matter of personal choice, but I would advise anyone with an old one now not to do anything more than light cleaning, no buffing or paste, etc.  That's just my suggestion.

I've never seen one shinny that wasn't cleaned but somewhere along the way all this old guns have just sit and not been cleaned on a regular basis so they would have dulled.  I've also seen a lot that seemed to be more lead than pewter and it was dull for sure.  Down right grey looking.
Bottom line is what jwh said.  Personal choice just like today.

I enjoy the look of them not shined. I don't like the garish shine of a fresh cap. I agree with everyone else. If you just shoot the rifle and clean it like normally it will get a nice patina.
