Trigger for Sideslapper
« on: March 22, 2025, 10:57:03 PM »
Would there be a store bought set trigger made that would be suitable for this lock. The sear is activated horizontally rather than vertical. I  am assuming the trigger plate would have to be modified somehow.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I'd sure like to see more photos of the lock, and see how the sear works.

If you use that lock, the trigger will have to be set up like on an early snaphaunce. It’s pins very high and swings like a swing. It’s pulled rearward and pushes the sear rearward. Look up “snaphaunce trigger”.

Yea might be simpler to look for a different lock. Works good though.

An ordinary double set trigger can be modified by adding metal to the leaf of the hammer trigger and filing it so that it strikes the sear's arm with a rearward action rather than a lifting action.  If I get a minute, I'll draw a picture and post.

I am working with a similar lock. I have made it work with the trigger pinned high and a pusher lever that is between the trigger and sear bar. It is ok. I am going to try another arrangement when I get back in the shop. I hope you will share what you come up with!

You need a tall trigger like a musket trigger.

Drill the pivot hole near the top and front. What you need is for the trigger to push the sear lever back as it swings. The back not the top of the trigger pushes the sear.
Clear as mud right!

The trigger shown works as a cam if the angle on the release blade works as it's supposed to.Precise fitting pin to turn on is mandatory for
reliable function and that includes the trigger bar inletting.

Drawing from a Navy Arms mule ear lock. the trigger bit and the bottom, shows how Navy Arms did theirs. The one I built into
my "Miss Muley was more compact and didn't hang out under the plate. a simple long bar, pinned high and just in front of the sear arm,
will pivot backward and release the lock.

I'm thinking this siler single action trigger is going to work . At least it will be a good start.

Wood Hick,

I have a similar side hammer lock with a horizontal acting sear that I want to use on a table-match rifle.  I will also be using a set trigger.  So, I'm very interested in hearing from those who have made this combination work.

I agree, I think your trigger is a good start, but as it is it will contact the sear at an oblique angle.  It may work, but I think closer to 90 degree contact would be better.  I think adding some steel as shown in this picture might work.  Also, having the trigger bar contact the sear bar out near the end should give the best mechanical advantage.

What do you think Taylor?

Add an L shaped pivot arm (I'll call it a Trigger Bar) to the lock plate to push horizontally on the arm of the Sear with the vertical arm of the Trigger Bar..
It's lower arm of the L shape comes out and across the top of the trigger plate underneath the trigger blade.

The pivot position for the L shaped of the Trigger Bar can be a stud installed on the back side of the plate just below the Sear arm. Slotted to accept the width Trigger Bar and the Bar pinned in place so it can pivot against the Sear Arm when pushed upwards by the Trigger Blade.

The Trigger can be either a Single Trigger, or if positioned correctly a DST.
Either would push the Trigger Bar  upwards and release the Sear by transfering the motion though it's pivot and push the Sear Arm directly in towards the LockPlate.

I think the Sear Arm could be reshaped , the Sear Arm Spur deffinetly removed as it is not needed.
The portion that the Trigger Bar is going to press against to release the Sear can be reshaped as needed for better geometry and leverage.

I think it'll work,,The same idea does on a Luger.
