Peter Alexanders DVD longrifles
« on: March 31, 2025, 01:50:07 AM »
Here are two of Peter Alexander’s rifles he made for his DVD series “Stocking the American Longrifle.” Peter stocked one rifle in the style of Lancaster/Virginia and the other a Lehigh Valley style rifle. His DVD’s covered everything from stocking, lock inletting, triggers, patchboxes, carving and engraving. Sadly, Peter passed away in April 2024 before he could finish the rifles. At the request of Peter’s son Andrew, I finished both rifles. I took Peter Alexander’s rifle building class in 2006 that he hosted at his home in Canada. Over the years Peter held his rifle building course and shared his passion on 18th century longrifles with many students. I wonder how many are on this site and if they are still building longrifles. If you have a rifle that you built with Peter please share...

About a year ago, I purchased an unfinished longrifle from an elderly gentleman in Ontario.  Bought it pretty much sight unseen due to the price and goodies that were included (Swiss rifflers, Henry Taylor carving tools, etc.)  He told me that he built it at one of Peter's classes - in the 1990's, as I recall - and it had been languishing in his workshop ever since.  Four or six in the class with weekly get-togethers, if I recall correctly.  There is some very good work and a few challenges to be dealt with.  The carving patterns that have been laid out are very good and I believe they are most likely by Alexander's hand.  A curious feature is the Sharon octagon barrel having been turned octagon to swamped round.  He told me Peter advised him to have that done.
I expect to get to it later this year.
