Russian Olive !  Close up of the grain on the left stalk please. If you are young and this is your first build you have a bright future!

Haha yeah she is a gem! Also yes it is my first one altogether. I've never even really been into muzzleloading yet haha and yes I'm only 23
Here's a close up, it is a beautiful wood.

Here is a picture of the flip side of it and a link to a video of my wife shooting it

Tell your wife I love her dress!  Looks like Alice in Wonderland. Cheers on the build thats really a neat way to do that lock. I'm doing my first scratch build. I'd be proud if it comes out 1/10 that neat.

A great example of where there is a will there is a way. Definitely not bound in the PC prison and willing to step out and explore. Go far my friend.

I have a couple of friends who can turn almost any scrap metal and wood into a workable gun, their ingenuity amazes me.

...I know it's not necessarily historically accurate as I don't really even know what a normal lock mechanism looks like, i havent ever even seen one in person, other than the one i made of course. Ive just seen some pictures of the outside of the lock mechanism, so I just designed my own thing...

I wish everyone in this forum would read this and contemplate the gumption and ingenuity required to do what that young man did.

Thanks, Pierce. I needed an uplift, and by Jove you provided it.

The ignition speed was quite impressive. Hope you get to drop a deer with it.

Stan57-- I agree.  This has inspired me to pick up the old kits  (7 or 8 ) of them and move forward. Someone raised him right.  Only 23?  8)

Well done. You wife is a good shot with a flint lock. Most that have never shot one flinch at the flash of the priming.  A friend of mine couldnt shoot mine but for his severe finch.  he put three shots into the ground half way to the target. He was an avid hunter with those we name not.

Your wife certainly has good form when shooting. I once helped a range officer teach a group of women how to shoot handguns.

Every woman who shot in that course would lean back in an attempt to get as far away from the firearm as possible.

It takes some convincing to get them to understand that they are in control of the weapon, and not to fear it. So, getting them to “step into” the proper holding position took some repetition.

Your wife was holding a very “casual” pose as she took a confident aim and squeezed off the shot.

Pierce, what's the barrel measure on the outside diameter. Just trying to get an idea for the wall thickness at dovetails, etc..

Dang that's cool wood! I have some Russian Olive on my wood pile to burn. Nothing big enuf for a stock though. Looks like European Walnut!
I know someone who successfully uses DOM steel for long fowler barrels.

Hey, Daryl,

The OD is about 1 inch and the wall thickness is about .27inches all the way down the barrel. The dovetail cuts into the barrel .09inch at the deepest part

Yeah Russian olive is a beautiful wood!! It is really odd to carve tho. It is very dense but stringy making it difficult to be precise. And I have had my wife do a loooot of shooting in preparation for her hunting. She also shot a little with her dad growing up. Very proud of her she can shoot quite well.
