new bag mixe material
« on: January 18, 2010, 11:26:30 PM »
the pouch is made from an old duffel bag , pillow ticking for the interior and leather for the flap and belt,  the thread is brown. The pouch is sealed with bees wax and the flap has a skirt and a star. The size approx 8 x 9. The next one not to sure i will wax it and i need do deepen the front of the pouch. This was fun. Any comments welcome.

Boy that looks a lot deeper than wide, so is your approximation of 8x9 close?  Looks more like it would be about 12 deep if it's 8 wide, or 15 deep if it's 9 wide.  Only reason I bring it up, in my use deep narrow bags tend to shift whatever I need right to the bottom of the bag and require a buncha digging.

All that aside, I really like the looks and construction.  Great idea.

Brownbear i measure from the front at the collar of the bag but your right it's 10 .5 total from outside and nine at the collar of the bag. I agree it does make it a little deep if i would of made the collar deeper it would make it better. Big chance that i will remedy this situation This is mostly trial and error for now, ,finding out what i like and dislike i am new at this bag game and enjoying it . In a near future i will be trying some shallow pouches. Pushing the envelope a bit but trying to stay away from to modern. Thanks for your impute and if you guy's can give me some places to look for models of pouches for viewing great thanks in advance

Frenchman...... I like your pouch and the way you intigrated the different materials to come up with you're unique design. I have carried a Virginia style pouch for years and I just recently made myself a new pouch of basically the same design as yours. My flap has a natural edge and a copper button. I use it with my early flint 54 cal gun. I see you have used the "South Hampton/Tim Albert" style strap. We tend to argue the different styles of pouches and yes there are pouches that are unique to certain areas, but there was always that guy who made a bag that served his need and that is what makes this hobby fun. You can use yours for a small haversack or an early rifle or fowler pouch. Thanks for sharing your talent.........Frank

i think why i enjoy it, it's trying to use second hand material and see what comes of it. I sometime try to imagine what would they do or how they would go about it with a minimum of material i have on hand. I am pretty sure nothing was wasted so i try to use the maximum of the material .I have Tim Alberts book and use it as my reference not having to much to go with so i will be searching the Internet for ideas and this summer will be visiting some museums around here .Never know what one could find
Thank for your kind words.

We have a similar spirit of making do with what's on hand.  Growing up close to the land, it sure seems like it would have been as natural then as now.

I've got several old sets of welding sleeves.  They're heavy but pliable rough-out leather, now blackened and scorched from long lives.  In the spirit of boot pouches, I'm betting they'll make dandy bags.  When I get around to it!   ;D
