breech plug tang thickness?
« on: January 20, 2010, 04:41:55 AM »
Getting ready to inlet the breech plug in my trade gun, the tang was really thick, so I filed it down to about 1/8", maybe I took too much off, I don't know. I hate to take more wood off than necessary. Does the tang actually strengthen the wrist that much? Or is it better to leave extra wood in this area, (thin tang) ? chuck

Chuck, There was a very recent post that addressed this issue. Take a look over the last couple weeks and you'll find it.

I learned to taper my tangs from Ron Ehlert.  I taper the thickness down to around 3/16".   I second your thought to remove as little wood as necessary.
On another note, I only inlet lock plates to about .050" and then file the bevel to match.
