The size of the bag depends on what you want to carry. Make it no larger, no less. Simple.

There are some pretty small bags around.  I've found a better measure than the width of a hand though.  I want one big enough that my balled fist moves into and out of without hanging.  It's a real drag to reach into a small bag and grab something, then have your hand hang up as you try to withdraw it.

TC Albert's book Recreating the 18th Century Hunting Pouch has some excellent patterns for small pouches, along with superb instructions for their build.  The best of the best in my experience.

You're on the path to the true light then!  ;)  About the same here.

As frame of reference, I found his double bag too small for my paws, but it was a great source for scaling up slightly to get something that fit.  1 1/2" wider and 1" deeper is about as small as I can use.

Frenchman.....There is a book that is by Mr Jim Webb from down in Virginia. It is called Sketches of Hunting Pouches Powder Horns and Accoutrement's of Southern Appalachia. I got my copy from a place called Bookworm and Silverfish in Wytheville Va. Their email address is bookworm@maxs.com if you want to contact them. It is a very good book, showing very unique hand drawings of pouches, horns and various articles that have been found in bags from the southern Appalachia. If you like to make pouches, you will be very pleased with this book. On top of that, Jim Webb is a prince of a guy. It is full of drawings of small pouches........Frank

Smallest traditional working rifle pouch I believe I ever saw is about 4"x4" and was made in the "D" style, which of course makes it look and function even smaller than that, ...Im guessing at the size as I never measured it, but I am pretty sure Im close...

Frenchman....There is a small hunting pouch on display at Point Pleasant's Tu-Endie-Wei Park in West Virginia, that is about 5 inches wide and 6 inches high and has a 1/2 inch strap. That is one of the smallest I have seen.   Frank
