New entry for September: Here are two targets I shot earlier today with my new Investarms .50cal. Great Plains pistol (8" bbl.) I used a .490" RB from a RCBS mould (.492" in fact) + .016" 100% cotton denim over 30gr. GOEX FFg. I shot these @ 25 yd. with the pistol butt on a rear bag, but my elbows weren't touching the table. (And I'm going to feel this in my upper back tomorrow!).

Wingshot, I'm glad you shot your first ever online match with your new Woodsrunner. I see a 2-inch group there. I wrote this a couple of days ago. I apparently forgot to hit the post button.
Maven, I didn't expect anyone to shoot this target with a pistol. Since we are shooting for group resting the pistol's grip on a bag as you did seem fair.
On your first target I see a 2 and 1/8th inch group. On your second target you are not measuring the correct balls.

Not especially concerned with winning the September Frolic, but with "ironing out the wrinkles" with my new pistol.

Can you explain the above? I maneuvered the tape measure so that it wouldn't obscure any of the holes in the target, but I assure you those are the "correct" balls.

Maven, the distance between your shots at 11 o'clock and 7 o'clock is where the tape measure
should be aligned with since that is the longest distance of your group.

That makes me want to get back to shooting my pistol decently. I used to shoot it more than anything else, but haven't shot it much at all since having a repair to the lock completed by the good folks at Chambers. Cans and water bottles at 25 yards used to be guaranteed, but last time I shot it I was lucky to hit anything!

Good shooting Seth. I have thought about doing an online pistol match, unfortunately I don't think many folks would shoot it.
Glad to see you shooting your pistol offhand. Plow handled pistols are meant to be shot one handed.

Alacran, when I choose the match one month I also thought about doing pistols, but I thought the same. There is no reason pistol shooters like Maven can't just join in on the regular matches though. Its fun to try with both if you have the time.

My poor entries. .54 Jaeger, Moody barrel 1:30 twist, 80 gr FFg, 0.018" patch one target with neatsfoot lube, one with dish soap solution lube (the better one), mostly .530 RB, bench off elbows 50 yards.
First target 3 & 7/16ths, neatsfoot lube

Second target 2 & 3/4, dawn soap solution lube

I was wondering have you tried shooting that barrel with lighter charges? 80grains of 2f seems a heavy charge for a 1 in 30 twist with round balls.
I know that twist will shoot a Powerbelt 295 grain bullets very well with 80 grains of 2f.
Just curious.

I tried 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 gr in 2Fg. The 70 and 80 seemed about tied, though that was with .535 RB and .018" patch, which is quite tight to load. This time I tried .530 RB which loaded better, spent patches seem OK, no cutting at lands. Have tried some .54 Minie, but the ones I have are not real consistent in weight, and skirts visibly vary in thickness. Groups a little more open and a little lower, but a snap to load.

Where might I find some of the bullets you mentioned?

You can find Powerbelt bullets at Wal-Mart, Sportsmans Warehouse also Midway, and Cabelas. When I shot those in .54, they were under the blackbelt name. Powerbelt makes them in 348 grains now. I have not tried those.
Does your Moody barrel have really thin lands, or is it a more conventional type of rifling? At any rate most inline so called modern Muzzleloaders have twist rate in the 1 in 28 range.
I had a very experienced rifle shooter at our range that was very disappointed in her muzzleloading rifle which was a .50 caliber with a 1 in 28 twist rate.
She was shooting roundballs since the recoil was not severe as when she shot bullets. Her accuracy with that rifle was less than stellar at 50 yards.
I happened to be at the range that day, so she asked me what the problem was with her rifle. I did my best not to deride the modern pos that she was shooting. I explained to her that her rifle was not intended for shooting roundballs since the twist rate was too fast to stabilize the balls with the 60 grain load of Tripple Seven she was using. I suggested to her to cut her powder in half and shoot for group. She could then adjust her sights to compensate for the weaker charge. She was shooting with the adjustable iron sights her rifle came with. Her groups improved dramatically since I also gave her good path material.
Needless to say, her particular barrel would never make a match quality rifle, but she enjoyed shooting it after her load change.

I had a .54 Percussion Sharps with 48" ROT. I used 120gr. 2F and a 450gr. solid tapered bullet from a Lyman mould. I used a 6.5x68 sizer die to taper the bullets to match the "chamber".
Lengthwise through a mule deer was the result that fall.

I managed to shoot 3 targets today. .610 ball over powder with blanket wad. Smoothbore at 25 yards , off hand standing
