October online match
« on: October 01, 2025, 10:28:34 PM »
Sight in your deer rifle with this target. 5 shots at 50 yards with a rifle. You may shoot sitting or standing, offhand or you may rest the gun against a tree or post. No bench rest or bags. Smooth bore may shoot offhand, standing at 25 yards.

I like it. I’ll be shooting this seated on the ground.

Printed up three. I think the wide color bands will give a good reference for elevation.

Shades of grey and black for my printer. Not sure I can start this month. Home from the lake now and getting my new knee re-attached on the 22nd,
about crippled right now.

Bad knees are tough. Hope you can get it fixed and get back at it. You can stick a bright dot in the center if you print black and white. That’s my printer also.

Pistols at 25 yards too if I should try? I doubt I'd come close to winning regardless, but I'd like to get my .45 pistol out and get some practice.

Pistols are fine. Same rules as rifles, except 25 yards instead of 50.

The hardest thing about shooting this target was getting back up off the ground to reload. Maybe try it again later.

Glad you put in a target, Dennis. Looks like 36 is the one to beat now.
Hoping to get out as well. Targets printed.

I won't be able to compete this month either. Perhaps Taylor and I can get out next month. Just got my knee replacement re-attached to the tibia this morning. Hope to be OK to compete in Nov. Oct was a write-off for me, sorry. :-[

Sorry to hear about that knee Daryl!  maybe pushed it too soon?  Im hoping to go out this month.  Haven't pushed my knee too hard in a while...

Well, I better try again.

Took my .54 Jaeger out for some final pre-season sighting in. From a sand bag rest I got to a 5 shot 1.2" group just a tad left and a couple inches high at 50 yards. Then tried the October match standing leaning against a post. I think I only hit the target twice. Was shooting 80 gr FFg a .020 patch with neatsfoot lube and .530 RB. Maybe should try sitting and a post forward brace, which I think is allowed this month.

Foresterdj, you may want to place your target on a large piece of paper or cardboard so you can see exactly where your errant shots are.
It might give you some reference points. I mean are your shots totally erratic or is it a group.
Anyway, I plan to shoot today and hope I don't get rained on.

Went to the Patoka Valley Long Rifles rendezvous yesterday. They shoot their woods wallk on Saturday.
I went over to their kd range to shoot this months target.
I used my no name barreled .45 rifle. I was using .440 balls with bear lubed .021 canvas over 50 grains OE 3f powder.
I had no optics with me since I forgot them.
I shot the targets offhand.

Shot the one on the left first. Had no idea where I was hitting till I retrieved the targets.
I needed to shoot a friend's smoothbore that I resoldered the forward underlog on. I had assembled the gun for my friend from a Tip Curtis kit he had in the closet for over 20 years.
I had only shot it once after I had completed it 4 years ago.
I used 70 grains 2f Goex with JoAnns 40 drill.

I had to hold at 7 o'clock on the bottom of the red ring.
My friend is blind in one eye and it shoots center for him.

Not going to make it out for a second try this month. Had all my gear in hand and heading down the walk to garage it started to rain. Forecast looks like rain through today and Halloween. Will hope to do better next month.

Went to the Corlanes Gun Store today, first time since the operation last Wed. Made it one end to the other and had to head home & go to bed.
Maybe next week, will be better. :(

Rain dropped back to drizzle, so I went and gave it a couple more tries.

Today shooting my Kibler fowler, 20 gauge/smooth bore .62 loaded with 70 gr 2Fg a nitro card a bare ball (some .610, some .600) and some wasp nest on top to hold it in. Offhand at 25 yards.

Target 1, well, at least I hit the paper 4 out of 5. I think last shot was just off the paper to the right. If so about a 9.5 inch "group" with one in the middle for a score of 9.

Second target, same loading, only 2 of 5 on the page, score 11

Happy Halloween.
