Another cast spring inquiry?
« on: October 27, 2025, 11:25:07 PM »
Good evening dear reader,
Recently, ‘TRS’ sent me 2 cast - Hall rifle springs:
After reading old posts on “cast springs” - these babies are more unique. Having never attempted work like this myself, do these require special treatment? I did mark the metal with blue Sharpie to see it turned purple and it did not.

So, if I was your apprentice under your supervision - where would you start? I’m eager to learn!

(I don’t own a forge, but I have propane and MAPP gas plus copious files and Emory cloth including 400)

Humblest regards and thanks,
James

Hi, the cast springs will work just fine. You want to make sure they’re clean and oiled. The quality of a cast spring sensitive to corrosion.

Regarding tempering. The 6150 cast steel needs to be  tempered at 750 for 1 hour (min) and air cooled.

I don’t recommend tempering with a torch, it’s extremely difficult to do can provide a very uneven temper.

Without a forge to temper I would do a lead bath or have a gunsmith do the tempering.
