Best Over Log Rifle Design?

My shootin buddy Eric Lau is always talking chunk gun shooting and is starting to peak my interest in building one.
Is there a Best Over the Log/Chunk Rifle Design?
What is used the most, perc. or flint?
He tells me 8 out of 10 winners use Paul Griffith's (fellow Michigander) barrels.
What is the typ. size, caliber and style of rifle, or is it all over the map?
Let's see some rifle pics and maybe hear some secret recipes!

Tom when I come down to pick up the barrel I will bring mine down to show you. There are ones from your offhand rifle to the sixty inch fifty pounders . Flint,underhammer percussin,mule ear per. ,to regular side locks .I've seen highly engraved classie looking rifles to ones that looked like they were made with a handax.  Come on in Tom the water is fine.

Getting in to log shooting??  Do it you won't regret it!

Heavy, accurate, fast, ignition and stable on a chunk (sand bag, block, or muzzle rest).  I can see where a flintlock might be preferred over having a patent breech as I understand most wipe between shots and that has a tendency to push fouling down into the ignition channel - not good.

I don't shoot chunk - yet.  My accurate rifle kicks to much to shoot prone.

Like Eric said,,"jump on in the water's fine". It's the most addictive defined discipline I've come across. The rifles run from here to there and back again. I have underhamers that go from 14# to over 40#, both flint and percussion. I have one of Ron Borron's available in flint with a 54" barrel and full stock in .40 caliber. There's also 4 original chunk guns on the wall, all in percussion. You name it and someone's tried it. Full stocks, half stocks and no stocks. Percussion, mule ears, percussion, flint and underhammer. Come on down to the York with Eric and you will really get an education.

Hey Tom, I went to my first chunck gun shoot last summer. Our buddy Eric was there too. I shot one of my heavy barreled target rifles, and Eric shot this super heavy barreled"I think it was rifled sewer pipe." Gun.   I won the first relay of the day, and wasn't even close the rest of the day.  I quickly learned that trash talking
between relays to get into your buddies head was just as an important skill as
shooting well yourself.  Also dressing up in those `ol timey clothes was fun.

Cal, I might have to just bring what I got & see what it does. Having a hard time seeing my front sight lately though so it doesn't matter what I shoot.

"old timey clothes"? you mean them NEWER 1900s duds?

You probably won't see me out travelling for awhile though. I'm going in for total knee replacement in a couple weeks.

Do like they said, listen to the docs and work hard on your rehab. My wife did both at the same time and today I can't keep up with her. Good luck and speedy recovery.
