Had to reset my own shooting date for this 200 yard round ball match.  I'm now looking at June 15 (Wednesday)...  I plan on making a day of it (weather permitting) and shooting the match with one of my flintlock rifle's first, then one of mhy caplock rifle's.  The projected forecast is 30% change of rain (that means a 70% chance of no rain), and 5 mph wind...  I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

I wear a PAST shoulder pad - the magnum, when shooting the .69 off bench or for target.  My shoulder is pretty good now and the pad has helped in it's recovery, immensely.  This rigth shoulder recovery of mine has been going on for about 3 1/2 or 4 years now.

Taylor and I call them lie detectors - along with chronographs.  Guessing then ranging is indeed eye opening- doing it a lot will give you a real idea on how to judge range more accurately.

JD - see page 1 for rules and target measurements.

Over unkown ground under the "Big Sky" its easy to be off 300-400 yards on a 400 yard guess.

Even 100 looking at a deer can be 140-160 when checked.
A friend, who is  highly experienced elk hunter, and I under shot a really big bull one morning with his 44-90 and my 40-90. 300 had become a real life 425 steps. I step within 5% if I concentrate. Bull was in 16" saw grass and no bullet strikes were seen. I knew exactly what to hold at 300.
We still laugh about this one. He was one of the big YNP bulls.

Sigh.....
But laser ranging was unknown to civilians at the time.

Dan

PS
Should be "shot AT really big bull"

If it wasn't for laser finders, about 1,000 gophers would still be alive, this year.

Just picked up my Bristle board at the store - perfect sizing for the targets. Bought 5, and 2 in black for the centres. Have to make those up today.  Taylor and I were discussing "it's time to do some 200 yard shooting-type stuff."

Well I never was able to catch a decent day in 2011 to shoot the 200 yard round ball target.  Seems like every day off I had the wind had to blow in the double didget MPH.

After seeing this picture posted just not to long ago, I got to wondering if we here should give this a try?  However, I was thinking 100 yards rather then 200 yards.  We'd probably get a few more trying this, over the 200 yard target.  Any thoughts?

I was impressed with this picture enough to add (what I guess is called a "Plank Shoot") to our local club's 2012 schedule.  We're going to give it a try anyway from 50 and 100 yards.  Should we set one up here for 2012?

Taylor is champing at the bit to get out and shoot the 200yard match, now that he has his big .62 Hawken sighted in for 200 yards.  He mentioned it again last week.

Well, we just got another 8" of snow on the weekend and it's snowing again now. We'll wait for spring, I guess.

CS...I'm into shooting the "plank shoot" and agree that 100 yards might interest more participants.

Oh yeah - me too.  The .69 might be OK from a plank - prone? no way.

Gee! A guy in Cody WY is a trend setter ;D
I think Steve started this for people who did not like shooting chunk gun matches since getting up from prone was difficult.
Not enough pushups when they were young I suppose.

That - or just getting older and of course, badly out of shape. At for the smoothbores,  I doubt enough would show up to make a match. Afterall, only CandleSnuffer, Taylor and I entered scores for the 200yard match - out of a quite a number of seemingly interested individuals.

Just thinking out loud here. Hunting rifles suck when shooting prone. Tradeguns and fowling guns are even worse. This 100 yard plank idea may get the folks with the smaller calibres to come out and play. Smoothbores too.
I'm liking this idea. I may put out feelers this summer at Heffley Creek Rendezvous to see if there is interest and maybe host a shoot. Hey,I'm pumped!@ ;D

Sounds good to me - I'll help and we can use the Monday afternoon and replace the chunk match with it - course we'll need a bunch of planks.

Steve sent me some of the turkey targets - they'll be easier to score for string measure - that's for sure, due to more misses off the scoring area.

It would be nice if we could put together a plank shoot here at ALR.  I'm thinking of running one (100 yards) at my local club.  Can't let Steve over there in Wyoming get to far a'head of us Nebraskans..lol :D

Daryl,

When scoring the turkey targets, I give a value of 7 inches for a miss. That what it is from center to the corner of the paper.

In 50 mph wind it is fairly easy to miss the paper if one is not paying attention...

Snuffer,

In my research I found where the Old Dead Guys would shoot turkeys off the plank sometimes out to 400 yards. This mostly with picket rifles. How about turkeys at 200 yards? A full size turkey with an x-center for string measure on the center of the body might be real interesting. Or, sudden death rounds that require a hit anywhere on the bird to stay in the shooting. The possibilities are endless...

Oh No! What am I going to do with my muzzle rest now?  :(  ;)  ;D,  As much as I enjoyed the chunk match at Heffley Cr., I can see the justification in running a "plank" Match as opposed to Chunk. I think a lot more people would have come out if they didnt have to get up+down. I have a .62 happening also now and am developing more interest in the 200 yds match, why I stopped by this thread in the 1st place. Turkeys sound like fun ......   regards.....   Kerry

The muzzle rest will work just fine when you shoot at home.  Just don't bring it to Hefley and expect to use it, Kerry.  ;D

I gave it a go at 200 yds, heres the resulting target. I shot 1 fowler, then 5 setting, elbows on knees for a score of 9, then five offhand standing for a score of 4. Total is 13, shots were numbered, 6,7 and 10 missed. I can see plenty of room for improvement, however I was happy to be on target a little more than 50%... regards....    :) Kerry    120g2f/.617 balls/.018 patch  spit lube

Yeah - harder than it looks, eh!  Except for that low # 1, Kerry, looking pretty good.

I have my target setting here as I wait for the coming weekend, Kerry.  I'll have four days off over Memorial Day weekend so this will be a good time to see if I can hit paper again at 200 yards with the ol' patch & ball.  14 points was the best I could do the last time, so I'd at least like to better that if I can.  It is a fun challange and a chance to stretch out my restocked .54 plains rifle. :)

I guess Taylor and I should get at it as well. I'd sure like to beat my last score. I'll also be shooting offhand and sitting. Prone would have been my choice, but just isn't likely in the cards for my .69s score.

So is this "match" just an on-going comparison of results from shooting same setups?  No crowns, coin, medals, podiums, or drug testing?

Is the plank shot here too?  I can manage 100 at a place or two on the back forty.  Will have to find another place for 2 or 300.  Laser ranger would make it easier for me to gauge distance across the hollers to set up a longer shot.

I should be ready to sling "postal" lead before the year is out.

last webmatch i did was 50ft. weak-hand only pistol--talk about some ugly targets and low participation rate.

I used to suggest a multi-gun match, but didn't get participation.  For ALR, a similar thing would be a combined smallbore/big bore thing where you shoot the little gun at 50 or 75 and then the move the target out to a longer range and punch it with the big gun, drop a shot or two (depending on rules) and score.  Similar could be done with short and long, two guns one target.

but i'll shoot the 200 and Plank before i stir the pot too much.

ANY rule on sighters?

Wade - we used a separate target for sighters prior to shooting the 10 for score.
