Daryl, what size target were you hitting at that 300 plus shooting years back? Reading about some of the long killling shots made in the civil war etc. are truly amazing. How the shooter could even see the aim point at those extremes baffles the mind!

The 'target' Taylor and I used, was a light coloured, whitish looking rounded rock - about 20" in diameter, that projected out of a 12' wide x 12' deep "V" of black dirt, on the side of "The Chief".  The whitish rock was in the middle of the V and was easily seen due to the black dirt around it - a perfect aiming point.  One merely held up enough barrel over the rear sight, puts the blade on the centre of the rock and fires.  The angle to the rock was about 30 degrees, I'd say, from the flat ground of the range.  The Chief is a granite face, very shear - the type that rock climbers like, & seem to fall from, every year.  It is part of the coastal mountain range that stretches from North Vancouver, BC, up into Alaska and South to California.

With naked eyes, hits on the rock appear as dirt splashes right on the edge of the rock.  With glasses you would see the ball in flight the last bit of travel, dropping onto the rock from above(that's the appearance), then deflecting off the tock to splash into the dirt at the side of the rock.  Initial hits as low as about 8' or as wide asperhaps 6' to either side were easily seen in the dirt and you could walk the 'hits' onto the rock quite easily by increasing the amount of barrel over the rear sight or holding windage for wind.

Taylor's .62 Hawken had a bright spot on the barrel from leaning it against the bench.   This light spot just happened to give the proper elevation for his right with the 120gr.(or more) powder charge he was using at that time.

We were both young then and had good eyesight. At times, we could hit the rock almost every time.  At that time, 1974 1975, we were using balls that were .005" smaller than the bore (same as today) and denim patching that was .022" thick, with spit for lube.  We found that basic combination worked in every rifle we've ever had - right to present. We only needed to finalize the powder charge to find the 'best' loads.

wow, what a challenge. Was at range saturday and got my hold at 200yrds. down but only managed 13/50.My problem seemed to be the offhand holding of the 54 cal. Was tough to hold, not sure what best posture is? I just spread feet shoulder width apart and buried my left elbow down into side as to get some steadiness. I think I will do better on a less windy day and without that guy behind me blasting his AR automatic rifle every second of the afternoon. Anyhow good idea here will post picture if i figure out how. Cant wait for another chance if we can?

It can be humbling when looking at just the score, but think about this,,, how many times did you hit the target?  22"x28" from 200 yards with a Round Ball and Iron Sights is no give-me.

Last year I posted a score of 14/50, however I hit the target 8 out of 10 shots so I felt pretty good about that.

At the beginning of this thread it states you can enter 3 scores this year, so you can enter two more if you'd like to, Yorktowne54.

If its not to windy like it was yesterday I'm going to try and get out this coming Wednesday (9/8) and get a score shot.

13/50 isn't a bad score in my humble opinion. :)

Some competitions do not allow body resting of the forend holding arm.   Off-hand - or free-hand shooting being exactly that - free hand, with no secondary contact with the body of the arms.  This was pointed out by one of the older (much older) shooters at the heffley Creek shoot we just attended, as being the norm for muzzleloading offhand shooting.  I concurred.  It is not a 'rested offhand shooting game, although many people think it gives them an advantage.  It actually doens't.  Many people use a body rest postition who lack arm strength - they need to do some exercises, I guess.

The Swiss introduced the body hold position - for me, it doesn't work due to a long 'body'/short leg of 32" inseam on a 6'1" frame.  I could not rest an elbow on my hip if I wanted to.  I can rest my elbow hard into my ribs with a short hold, which I do with a modern rifle when using a shooting glove or mit, but when shooting with a muzzleloader, I hold the forend at the entry-pipe with my forefinger running down the rod.  This system removes a lot of the windage movement, and one contends with mostly elevation fault.

I would really like to participate in this shoot as I now have a custom built rifle with a smoking accurate GM barrel that I feel could shoot at this distance, but I can’t find a rifle range that is set up for 200 yards. Next year could we make it 100 yards??

I like the idea of a 100 yard match too, but I wouldn't want to do away with the 200 yd. shoot.  I have a rifle on the bench right now just for the 200 yard match.

Daryl, I do but the measuring to ensure that it's 200 yards exactly might be tough.   :)

No problem - we used a laser rangfinder.   You could always try one out from your favourite local sporting goods store, drive some stakes and take it back. They are nice to have in your bag when hunting. I wouldn't be without mine.

For the "sitting " option, does that mean sitting at a bench, or sitting on the ground?

ground I expect - apparently we weren't supposed to use the cross sticks. This coming summer, I'll probably pad up a bit and use prone, or sitting. Can hardly wait  - 140gr. 2F- 480gr. RB- prone! :o

Harry - I'll know after the first shot, but sitting would be A/OK. Depends on how much meat I put on that shoulder this winter, I guess.

The weather around these parts is finally getting tolerable, so I'm thinking sometime this month or early June I'm going to shoot a 200 yard target and see how I do with it this year.  I only need to break 15 points to better my last outing.   :D

I might even get in on the 200 yard shoot, since I recently joined a gun club with a 300 yard rifle range. The only problem is getting to the range when it isn't busy. Gotta practice some too, since I have only shot at 200 yards a coupla times...and not too successfully either.  :(

J.D. who is very happy to have access to a decent range.

PS, would someone please reiterate the rules? Either I'm blind or senile, but I didn't see any rules....or is this they type of match where we don't need no steenkin', said with a Mexican accent,  rules?

Yeah I can range deer to 800-1000 with mine on a good day ;D
Little far to shoot though.
Range estimation out here can be really tough, guessing a range and then ranging it can be "interesting".

Taylor and I call them lie detectors - along with chronographs.  Guessing then ranging is indeed eye opening- doing it a lot will give you a real idea on how to judge range more accurately.

JD - see page 1 for rules and target measurements.

What ever happened to the 200 yard RB match? I just joined the site and feel like a kid in a candy store.
I shot the steel match at Friendship in 1980/81(?) with my .62 Hawkin using a .610 RB - .017 pillow ticking and 180 GR FFG (chronographed 1705 FPS).
The grouping was consistantly covered by my hand at the 200 yard range. I actually bent the bears at 200 yards, but the guy running the range assured me that it was impossible to bend them with a round ball. All I knew was that they resembled a Grizzley with their hunchbacked look and had to be tilted backward to stand up.
I understand that it was a mystery for years as to who "bent the bears".

David - go to the first thread in this forum (shooting).  Print out your targets and have at it.  Taylor and I are thinking of competing again.

Shooting long range BPCR prone, a lot of us use PAST recoil pads on our shoulders. They really work.
540 gr bullets, 100 gr powder and up to 200 rounds over 3 days can beat you up without one.
