New Horn, repair delamination?
« on: February 10, 2010, 10:47:41 PM »

raw horn was a gift, so I didn't have high expectations for it. There are some checks near the butt that I'm not even going to try and touch. They come back to the surface right behind the tip, with a little gap (maybe 3/32" at worst). I wanted to ask what you guys would suggest to fill it. I've got cutler's cement ready to go if that's the answer.

I also would like to add some brown to the tip, is there anthing special as far as green are concerned? Thanks gang

I repaired an old horn like that once by squirting super glue up under the lamination.  It would fine, it was visible, but secure.

I would probably keep working it down and see what happens, it looks like there is plenty of horn to work with, taper it more from the base up, thin is not necessarily bad. Not sure what you mean by checks but you could always shorten the base if need be to get rid of them. Or you could put a rawhide patch on the whole thing or just on the parts that need it. Copper, brass, pewter, staples,etc...could be used as needed.
Since it was free you haven’t lost anything, experiment with it, save the base for another.

I caved to Tim's peer pressure, and hacked the delaminated parts off. I can't say I'm dissatisfied with the result. The horn is much lighter in weight, and the sides are now translucent. The inner part of the horn is a little less forgiving as far as the layers being willing to separate with prying, so I'll leave it as-is and let it get some wear.

Headed in the right direction. Can you work those grooves out? You probably have enough thickness there, at least to the lowest spot in the groove. Have you pinned you base yet?

unfortunately not, the undulations/fluting at present inside the horn as well. I did go ahead and peg the base.
