D Coon Plains Rifle

There is a flintlock plains rifle entered in auction here in the UK ,advertised as circa 1780 by D Coon  , Any info on this maker?

In American Firearms Makers by A. Merwyn Carey, there is the following entry...

Levi Coon, Sr, 1776-1821. Shop located at Ithaca, NY, made flintlock Kentucky rifles, business carried on by sons, Levi, Jr. and Daniel, into percussion period.

I would think 1780 is too early for a "Plains" rifle, but Daniel could be your man.

KyFlinter thank you for the info  The gun has been over restored the estimate price in pound sterling is £2800  and with 17.1/2% commission will make it just over $5000 at that price I will give it a miss,once again thanks for you help

I believe it looks much too late to be a 1780 gun as well.

The Motts Corners Coon barrel forge was established about 1835,  following his site at Triphammer (Ithaca) started arounf 1820/21.  the Motts Corners Caroline factory is the one later purchased by the Losey brothers (benjamin and John).

Has a matter of interest the D Coon plains rifle came up for auction here in the UK today .It was an estimate £2200 to £2800, it did not make the reserve with a bid of £1700 sterling  and did not sell.
