New Resource for Aspiring Builders
« on: February 28, 2010, 05:13:13 PM »
"American Tradition" is the brand new magazine being produced by the CLA. Even a quick look through it confirms that it has multifaceted appeal, something in there to satisfy those with various angles of interest. Perhaps of most interest to builders - particularly those with limited access to original pieces -  there is a photo essay by Henry Bishop in the first issue that describes in great detail many characteristics of John Bonewitz rifles that were passed on to his apprentice Leonard Reedy, then later in the article how these characteristics have been an influence on Mark Wheland's work - all this accompanied by pages of top quality full color detailed photographs.
Do I need to repeat that last part? The Editor indicates that plans for the magazine are " to feature contemporary art and provide educational and technical articles highlighting antique arms as well." Sounds like this ain't a one time thing.

Ian,
I was just reading mine this morning.  Nice change from the old CLA publications.  I hope it is continued.  It was really nice to see so many ALR members mentioned and featured in the articles too.  I loved the article on the Colonial Williamsburg Gunsmith shop and the folks that have worked there.  Hats off to Gary Brumfield for his efforts and time in keeping the traditional craft alive and well.  There's some really high quality photographs in the articles.
Cheers,
Ken

So where you fellas getting this magazine from? Is it a part of CLA membership? I cannot find a mention of it on the website. Sounds like a valuable resource. It is unbelievable how much more detail can be seen in quality color photographs.

Pete,
It's part of the CLA membership.  This was marked Volume 1, #1 so I'm assuming it will continue.  Maybe someone "in the know" will chime in.  There's a nice full page ad for Getz Barrels and Chambers Flintlocks.  Maybe one of them will know some details.

Although I have not received my copy, I understand that it will be an ongoing publication included in CLA membership. It has been funded by a fund raising arm of the CLA called, I believe, The CLA Foundation. They have previously funded some exhibits at NRA shows, etc. that promoted contemporary arms building.

This first issue was in the works for several months and was the work of Mel Hankla, David Wright, Frank House, Jim Wright, and several others. Hopefully they will get the thanks they deserve for this huge effort!

I previously posted this in the "Over the Back Fence" section, but I'll include it here as well.

I just got my copy today.  I can't express how fantastic I think this is.  Fine thoughtful articles, excellent photography and put together in a beautiful fasion.  My thanks go out to all of those who have worked long and hard on this project.  It sure is appreciated.

I believe I read in there somewhere that it is intended to be semiannual.

I wish it were more often, but they have their work cut out for themselves regardless.  They have set the bar pretty high.  If future issues are up to this same standard, it will be my most anticipated periodical, for sure!

It does say it will be published twice a year.  That's what happens when you flip right to the pictures.  You miss stuff.

Folks, the Premier Issue of AMERICAN TRADITION, the Journal of the Contemporary Longrifle Association is in route to all members of the CLA. Many have already received it as is evident from this thread, but others are still anxiously awaiting their copy. (I’ve not yet received mine either!) As you enjoy our new publication you will recognize familiar names; members of not only the Contemporary Longrifle Association, but the Kentucky Rifle Association and the Honourable Company of Horners as well. Many of which are also members of ALR.

This first issue is only a sample of what each full color bi-annual journal will feature. American Tradition will present a broad range of informative articles highlighted with exquisite photography.  Plans are to not only feature contemporary art and artists, but to also provide educational and technical articles pertaining to antique arms and related works of art. And… instead of featuring articles about one particular artist, we plan on presenting articles pertaining to different aspects of the “art” so that work of many artists can be highlighted in each issue.

The second issue is already in the works, with articles by Mark Silver, Ted Franklin Belue, Michael Galban and Steve Hench that will be illustrated with spectacular color photography. The theme for issue two is “Documenting the Past” and CLA members can expect it in late July.

During the last twelve years the CLA has developed into an organization of individuals who are influenced by some aspect of the American Longrifle. Our goal with this Journal of the CLA is to educate, disseminate information, promote the association, its members and their art, and historical arms and related arts.

Only members of the CLA will receive future issues of this publication, so I personally invite you to become a member by visiting our website; www.longrifle.com

As most of you already know, our annual show is held each August in Lexington, Kentucky. This year’s dates are August 19-21.  Hope to see you there!

Mel,
Thanks for the information and your efforts putting this publication together.  You and everyone else involved did an outstanding job.  A welcome addition to an already great association.
