barrel pins.
« on: March 23, 2010, 10:44:37 PM »
I've been poking about for some alternatives for barrel pin material.  All my busted drills are too short or too fat.  the local hardwares don't carry an real drill rod.  so I've been brainstorming and came up with   ---- bicycle spokes----got a buddy who builds exotic high end racing, touring, and trail bikes.  I just gave him a call and he has a bunch of used stainless steel spokes in his scrap bin.  they run 5/64th and are a fairly hard stiff grade.  and the price will be perfect.

I cut'em short  and out of sight anyway.  a little dirt and wax in the hole is easy to clean out

Buy a piece of 1/16" drill rod & you'll have all the pins you need. ;D

When you go to the craft store and ask for drill rod, and they tell you they don't carry that, then ask for some music wire of .0625" or 1/16".  They'll say, sure sir/madam..here you are.

But I don't like it...I use finishing nails.

I used to use finishing nails, but when I ran out , I used coat hanger  wire per H. House's video.
Sometimes I've used fence wire for the thimbles. It works fine.

I'm sure the spokes will work fine.  Try using a propane torch on the ends to make them turn color so no shiny ends.

The nails I use are 2" long and are .073" diameter.  I usually cut them just short of coming flush with the wood, and put a little countersink in the ends so that I can push them out with my vent pick, and not slip off into the adjacent wood.  In the example here, though, there is an escutcheon plate, and I have left them proud and domed.  Usually there in none.

And here's the little 1/8" centre drill I use to make the divit...

the TOTW kit came with hardened pins, but they are all the same size.

I drilled my temporary removable working pins out of some smaller 1/16 stock I had.

I prefer to use smaller less obtrusive pins for the stuff that will seldom get removed; thimbles,  trigger guard pins,  buttplate upper tang pin.  I'll use larger pins on the barrel pins

Guys, guys, don't get all gushy over that inlay of Taylor's...that's a pop rivet holding the inlay into the stock.

The divot is a good idea, and I only put it on the end that I put into the gun so I know what end goes back if I ever take them out, I also put a little file mark on the center of the pins ( one mark on first from breech, two on second, etc.) so I know what pin goes where.    Gary

yeah, you think he'd have used a real good one like a steel cherry-max at least rather than that old hardware store 'luminum-look'n one :D

You can buy from McMaster -Carr or any number of suppliers 1/16 or 5/64th diameter prehardened spring wire in 3 foot lengths.  A pack of 10, that's 36 feet of wire, sells for all of $14.52.  http://www.mcmaster.com/#steel/=6cv8om  Enough for a life time supply for all the barrel pins, guard pins and trigger pins you could want.  Alternatively you could buy one piece from a hobby shop for about the same price.

I'm with Taylor.  I too use the 6 penny finishing nails.  They are very easy to work with.  Don't know what size they are in Canada but as Taylor said they are 2" long and are .073" diameter.
