I finished this up and was able to sight in a couple weeks ago during a brief January thaw. Yeowey, Its a head shooter for sure!!!! It is a 42", .36 Cal. Very slim and light swamped Rice barrel that Jason offered here recently. Not a copy of any one gun, but a compilation of Western North Carolina guns in my attempt to capture the clean line and rugged beauty of these guns. I referenced the guns featured in Willian Ivey's wonderful book "North Carolina Schools of Longrifles 1765-1865". I used The Gillespie castings offered by Dennis for the butt cap and trigger guard, Bails lock. It is a shooters gun and even as light as it is, it comes to point and holds steady.

That long skinny rifle is a beauti, Robby. I really like it. My .32 only has a 38" bl. and it would be 100 times better if 42" or so.

Robby, that's a really slender, trim and good looking rifle.  Mine's 38" and has the barrel Jason Schneider recommended to me.  I'd have preferred a 42" but.....

I built one .36 caliber Samuel Faries flintlock (Ohio Long Rifles Volume I, and in Behold The Longrifle).  Sterling silver mounted.   I never got to shoot it more than to regulate the sights when Sandy bought it for her husband Keith.

But it would shoot.  This is a one-shot target at 100 yards for closest to the red dot.  See the .36 caliber hole in the dot?  Off hand, too.  These are the only two pictures I have of it.

Very beautiful rifle, Robby! Looks about identical to my .32cal House/Lambert rifle which is duplicated from an original South Carolina Mountain rifle.

I built this one several years ago. It has a reworked late Ketland lock with roller bearings on the tumbler shaft. Also reworked main and frizzen springs. The barrel is a A profile 44" radius rifled 32 Rice barrel. It easily shoots one hole groups at 30 yds. One of these days I am going to even take it squirrel hunting ;D

The stock is cherry, the guard and BP are some I had in my junk parts bin that I reworked. No particular style unless you want to call it a Powhatan County VA school ;D

You guys have inspired me to get that .32 Ed Rayl barrel I picked up a while back into some wood. I have taken a few with my .50. Head shots or bark them. All that is left on head shots is a flap of skin and 2 ears.

Yeah I agree, David R. - I do wish Taylor would get building that .25 he has already had inlet into a walnut stock (David R.). Can you imagine what a joy bunny shooting that would be?

No I haven't, LB -- but -- I tested barking a few with the .69 one fall - very touchy shooting that is, too far into the tree, no effect, if perfect, they fly about 30'. LOL - If too close to the squirrel, spreads them all over the place.

Here is one of mine.

It's a .36 cal, swamped "A" weight Rice barrel, 44 inches long. I don't think the rifle weighs more than 7 lbs.  Packdog6 made this for me a few years back. It is a delight to carry all day, and it makes me look like a much better shooter than I am. I need to take better pictures of it, and of my .40 squirrel rifle. I might get to take this one to Missouri this year and try my luck on "real" squirrels !!

Well here is my (future) squirrel rifle. 36 cal. GM 44" swamped barrel, Chambers Queen Anne lock, walnut from a blank etc etc... She's been considerably thinned since this first photo but I still have a ways to go. I managed to drill the RR hole downwards toward the end of its run so the forearm will be a bit thick but I can live with it. I intend to keep it once she's done, hope she shoots, been a fun project.

I like your choice of lock, Dave. I have most of the findings in hand for a build that includes that same lock with a bronze plate. Premium curly ash plank and a .40 x 46" A-Rice. I figure some engraving and aging so it looks like a repurposed pistol lock, but otherwise pretty much looking newish.

Thanks to all for sharing these fly rods of the rifle world.

So far I haven't seen anything I didn't like a lot on this thread.  IMHO this is a wonderful thread for those who love to see pics of small game rifles meant for taking into the woods.  As best as I can figure we have a long way to go with these pics of slender squirrel takers before we can even think about taking a breather.  These are my favorite type rifles, those meant for real and lazy day hunting.  With the big bores it's "bang" and hunts over.  With these little pill shooters that first "crack" is just the beginning.
