You can do what is called barking. You shoot the branch the squirrel is standing on and the brach and the stunned squirrel come crashing down. Then you jump on the squirrel and put it in a chokehold. Make sure the little bugger doesn't bite you.

In Tennessee when using a large caliber and not wanting to damage the tree, we wheeze them.  That is when you catch the squirrel running along the branch and fire so the heavy ball passes right in front of the squirrels nose. The vacuum in the wake of the ball sucks the air out of the rodents lungs, causing him to wheeze and fall out of the tree. Then you can use the chokehold. And Anna Nicole married for love.

I like that. Choke it while it's wheezing.

Pepper.

Sniff it to see what it is, starts sneezing and beats his brains out on the branch.  Go next day and pick 'em up...

Maybe.  :-)

Tried that, but the gophers always eat 'em before I can get back to collect them.

Raised in Donelson (Nashville), raised kids in Mt Juliet and now have some acreage east of Lebanon. I've used that wheezing story for years. People listen like it is gospel until the very end. Then it dawns on them.

We always used a powder-puff load and a big ball for bushytails.  We'd shoot them in the body which knocked the breath out of them and knocked them out of the tree.  Then we'd run up before they could recover and "head smack" 'um.

Yeah, a head smack can be as good as my triangle choke hold.

I used to take my ex-wife squirrel hunting with me.  We filled our limit without firing a shot, she was so ugly that they would gaze down on her countenance and just tumble out of the tree dead right there, grinned to death so to speak.  I had to quit taking her though, she was tearing them up too bad.  She left me for another hunter, with a newer truck.  Keep yer powder dry.......robin

A picture for the record of my squirrel rifle;

Got a new camera cord for my birthday.    :)

Homemade apart from lock and small wood screws in patchbox.

You've seen it before but thought I'd add it here as I Had mentioned it.

You can see what's left of these tiny northern red  squirrels after being shot, on the barrel head in front of the rifle.

Bowkill,

I posted this rifle on the gun -building forum a while ago, but here is the patch-box.

Engraving is rubbish as I found out my eyes needed work when I was doing this one.   :-)

Takes a .425" ball and I rifled it 1 turn in 45".

Nothing wrong with that engraving, better than 99% of the work done in American gun shops 200 years ago.

Man, I agree with Mike Richard!  There's no flies on that rifle at all.  It's just a pleasure to see your work.

Here's photos of a .40 cal. Edwards rifle that I squirrel hunt with.  It has a Bobby Hoyt gain twist barrel and it seems to do real well with a 40 grain charge and .380 roundball .. greased with coconut oil. And the best hunter I ever hunted with.Sure do miss him.

Thanks guys!  It was a fun project and the rifle is a joy to carry with the A-weight barrel.   I will try to get out in the next week and "scare some more squirrels to death" with it!  Here are a couple more pics.  The target has eight shots on it at 30 yards, five of them in the bullseye.  The low flier was a different patch, the high flier was the first shot on the target and I have no excuses for it.  ::)

Well, it's factory made but still a nice shooter.  Plus it has virtually no recoil so newbies get the satisfaction of lots of smoke with that "crack" when the RB breaks the speed of sound.  With everything going on these days, it's a wonderful thing to convert a gun hater or someone who is just afraid of guns in general to someone who thinks it's fun.
